Electrical Construction & Commissioning Engineer

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Construction & Commissioning Engineer to support industrial facility and manufacturing construction projects within an automotive or heavy industrial environment. This role is responsible for overseeing electrical system installation, contractor coordination, commissioning, startup activities, and ensuring compliance with project specifications, safety requirements, and industry codes.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in electrical field engineering, construction management, commissioning, and industrial facility systems. This individual will work closely with project managers, contractors, facility teams, and equipment vendors to ensure successful project execution from design review through final handover.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Construction & Field Support
Facilitate electrical building system startups, testing, and commissioning activities.
Conduct inspections and observations of electrical building systems to ensure compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and applicable codes.
Oversee electrical contractor activities for adherence to project schedules, milestones, and coordination requirements.
Support construction administration activities related to scheduling, quality control, weekly coordination meetings, and planned utility outages.
Coordinate electrical installation activities during plant shutdowns, weekend work, and production-impacting construction events.
Conduct continuous work progress inspections to monitor quality, safety, and schedule performance.
Design Review & Technical Oversight
Review product submittals, shop drawings, engineering drawings, specifications, and contractor RFIs.
Provide subject matter expertise related to electrical system design, commissioning, and field implementation.
Support design criteria development for electrical systems in industrial and manufacturing facilities.
Provide feedback to improve technical specifications, standards, and construction methods.
Safety, Codes & Compliance
Ensure compliance with electrical safety procedures and OSHA requirements.
Apply knowledge of Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), Electrical Safe Work Practices, Control of Hazardous Energy, and arc flash safety.
Ensure work complies with applicable building codes and industry standards, including:
International Building Code (IBC)
National Electrical Code (NEC)
National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
ASME, AMCA, ARI, AWS, ASHRAE, and FM standards
Project Coordination & Reporting
Coordinate equipment factory testing, delivery, installation, commissioning, and turnover to end users.
Collaborate with construction contractors, vendors, plant facilities teams, and manufacturing departments.
Prepare field engineering reports outlining project progress, schedule updates, and construction status.
Communicate technical information effectively through written reports, meetings, and presentations.
Support project managers with schedule tracking, risk identification, and issue resolution.
Required Qualifications
5–10 years of professional experience in electrical engineering, industrial construction, or commissioning.
Minimum of 2 years of construction management or field project oversight experience.
5 years of experience in electrical design or industrial electrical systems.
Experience within automotive manufacturing, engine/transmission facilities, vehicle plants, or similar industrial environments.
Strong understanding of electrical building systems, installation practices, and commissioning processes.
Working knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and electrical safe work practices.
Strong organizational, communication, and schedule management skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Project.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Bluebeam and AutoCAD.
Multi-discipline experience including electrical, civil, or mechanical construction.
Experience with Toyota manufacturing systems or Kanban environments.
Startup and commissioning experience involving substations and/or mechanical equipment.
Some college coursework, technical training, or equivalent field experience.
Work Environment
Primarily field-based role supporting active construction and manufacturing facilities.
Frequent interaction with contractors, vendors, and operations teams.
May require weekend work, shutdown support, and schedule flexibility.
Travel may be required depending on project location and commissioning schedules.
