Job Overview

The Detention Center Teacher supports instruction (in collaboration) with other instructors, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities, as required. 

 

 

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; work may differ and other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate.

  • Continually assesses student achievement and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes
  • Plans and implements appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate kind and level of materials, appropriate learning experiences, allotted learning time to maximize student achievement, and utilization a variety of instructional materials and available multi-media and computer technology to enhance learning
  • Personalizes instruction based upon the needs of students and manages time to maximize student learning opportunities
  • Assesses student growth as related to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes
  • Adheres to LCPS Assessment and Grading policy and guidelines
  • Manages the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure that the environment is conducive to the learning process and assists and participates in management of student behavior in all parts of the Program
  • Coordinates instructional activities with other professional staff, both school and non-school based, as required, to maximize learning opportunities
  • Participates in in-service and professional development activities and staff meetings, as required or assigned
  • Continually communicates with students on instructional expectations to keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations
  • Communicates with parents through conferences
  • Collaborates with other professionals (school counselors, home school Special Education Designee, librarians, etc.) to carry out instructional or related activities as needed

 

Qualifications

Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.

 

     Education

     Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited University or College

 

     Experience

     Successful experience as a teacher

 

     Licenses and Certifications

     Holds or eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License with an endorsement in subject area

 

     Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Possesses leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community
  • Comprehensive knowledge of State and Federal Regulations governing students with disabilities
  • Knowledge and experience with school-wide systems to support inclusive practices
  • Knowledge and experience implementing and analyzing the effectiveness of evidence-based behavior interventions and supports
  • The ability to travel occasionally for training purposes

   

      Additional Requirements: 

  • Endorsement in one or more areas of Science required
  • Endorsement in Special Education preferred

Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
