This position services, inspects, troubleshoots, repairs and tests all gasoline and diesel powered Public Works equipment, trucks and attachments; performs work at multiple garage and field locations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.
- Performs inspection, analysis, removal, disassembly, reconditioning and replacement of parts and assemblies including engines, transmissions, differentials, suspension, hydraulic, steering and braking systems, drive trains and other components.
- Removes and replaces radiators and fuel tanks, cleans carburetors and distributors, makes controls adjustments, replaces generators and spark plugs, replaces injectors and pumps, tests electrical charging systems, lubricates equipment.
- Works on mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment including trucks, loaders, excavators, graders, tractors, dozers, conveyors, mowers and other types of highway construction, maintenance and snow and ice control equipment.
- Utilizes computer software and systems, diagnostic tools and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot equipment problems ,detects machinery or equipment failures.
- Reads and interprets service and parts manuals, schematics and other technical and reference publications.
- Performs U.S. D.O.T. inspections of all commercial trucks and trailers, completes and submit reports.
- Calibrates distribution systems on salt/sand spreaders and liquid de-icing systems.
- Researches, sources and orders repair and replacement parts and supplies, works closely with the Inventory Specialist. Maintain records of work orders, labor, and materials used on each job.
- Maintains cleanliness of shop and working order of shop equipment.
- Operates communications equipment between shop and field personnel to communicate and relay information as necessary; receives telephone and radio calls, communicates and relays information to supervisors and field crews.
- Installs, troubleshoots and repairs two-way radios.
- Maintains and repairs hand tools, power tools, lift equipment, power equipment and diagnostic equipment.
- Maintains work station and other assigned areas in an organized and safe condition.
- Ensures personal safety by use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ensures others’ safety by use of screens and shields.
- Responds to field service calls, performs repairs in remote locations.
- Performs minor welding, cutting and fabricating.
- Inspects and prepares new equipment for use, provides instructions to users on operating and service requirements.
- Road tests vehicles and equipment after service or repair, completes and submits service records, completes work orders.
- Responds to emergency situations including after-hours, weekend and holiday assignments, and provides technical expertise to ensure that all aspects of the situation are handled in a proper and legal manner.
- May operate snow and ice removal equipment as needed.
- Operates forklift and wheel loader loading and unloading materials and supplies.
- Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all County safety regulations; assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment; ensures equipment is safely operated and driving laws are obeyed; ensures all regulations per training to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
- Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority. Follows all policies for reporting, investigating, and follow-up of equipment incidents or personal injuries.
- Provides back up assistance to other department personnel as needed.
- Maintains appropriate records including complete equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, and other related data.
- Cleans and maintains equipment and storage area.
- Completes written records of labor and materials used for each work project.
- Reports to work for after hour needs, as assigned.
- Performs emergency repairs and work as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Advanced knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines and manual, automatic, hydrostatic and powershift transmissions.
- Advanced knowledge of electrical, hydraulic,pneumaticand manual equipment systems and controls.
- Advanced knowledge of drivetrain systems and components, undercarriage, wheels, tires, suspension systems.
- Knowledge of lubricant, systems fluids and fuel specifications,propertiesand applications.
- Knowledge of practices, methods,materialsand tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
- Knowledge of computerized diagnostic hardware and software.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and necessarysafetyprecautions.
- Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment purpose, use, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of safe operations of heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
- Ability tomaintainaccuraterecords of assigned activities, ifrequired.
- Ability to read and follow technical manuals, service manuals,schematicsand other instructional materials.
- Skill in time management; prioritizing duties toaccomplisha high volume of quality work product requiring minimal supervision.
- Ability to define problems, exercise sound judgment, and address a variety of situations successfully.
- Knowledge and ability to follow the policies and practices contained in theCountyPersonnel Handbook.
- Ability to work theallocatedhours of the position and respond after hours if needed.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma/equivalent and three (3) years’ experiencetraining or apprenticeship, and experience in, heavy equipment and truck repair and maintenance.
- Wisconsin ClassA CDLwithNendorsement or obtain within six (6) months from date of hire.
- Must have or obtain the following certification/licenses at time of hire.
- Flagger (Traffic Control)
- Traffic Incident Management Training
- Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) Miner
- First Aid / CPR
- Must have training and showdemonstratedproficiencyin the following areas:
- Load Securement
- Forklift Operation
- Trench Safety
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Hazardous Materials identification
- Emergency response protocols
- Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment drug test.
