Position Summary
The Staff Accountant serves as the primary owner of JUMPSTART South Carolina’s day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accurate, timely, and well-documented financial activity across all programs, social enterprises, and funding streams.
This role is responsible for executing accounts payable and receivable functions, maintaining financial records in QuickBooks, and producing reliable monthly reporting through QuickBooks and Tableau to support executive leadership and Board oversight.
The Staff Accountant reports directly to the CEO and works closely with the Chief Innovation Officer (CINO) and external partners (audit, 990, compliance) to ensure financial integrity, transparency, and alignment with Board policies.
Work Schedule & Capacity
This is a salaried, part-time position averaging 25 hours per week. The role is designed around ownership of JUMPSTART’s core financial operations while allowing flexibility in schedule and work location.
For candidates seeking full-time employment, JUMPSTART may have up to 15 additional hours per week available through related administrative, reporting, or operational support responsibilities. These additional responsibilities would be discussed during the interview process and matched to the candidate’s skills and organizational needs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Accounts Payable & Disbursements
- Process all vendor invoices, ensuring accuracy, coding, and proper documentation
- Maintain vendor files, including W-9s and payment terms
- Prepare weekly payment runs for CEO/CINO approval
- Ensure compliance with approval thresholds and internal controls
- Track and manage recurring expenses (utilities, insurance, leases, etc.)
2. Accounts Receivable & Revenue Tracking
Record and reconcile all incoming funds, including:
- Donations (integrated with CRM systems)
- Program fees
- Social enterprise revenue (Landscaping, Culinary Arts, etc.)
- Monitor outstanding receivables and follow up as needed
- Ensure proper classification of restricted vs. unrestricted funds
3. Financial Operations & Bookkeeping
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in QuickBooks
- Code all transactions in alignment with chart of accounts and program structure
- Perform monthly bank, credit card, and account reconciliations
- Maintain organized digital documentation for all financial activity
4. Monthly Close & Reporting
Prepare monthly financial reports, including:
- Profit & Loss (by class/program)
- Budget vs. Actual comparisons
- Cash flow summaries
- Build and maintain dashboards and reporting outputs
- Ensure financials are complete, accurate, and ready for executive review
5. Support for Audit, 990, and Compliance
Prepare schedules and documentation required for:
- Annual audit
- Form 990 preparation
- State and federal filings
- Serve as primary internal contact for external accounting partners
- Ensure all documentation is audit-ready and accessible
6. Financial Controls & Stewardship
Maintain strong internal controls over:
- Disbursements
- Documentation
- Account reconciliations
- Ensure no unauthorized payments or undocumented transactions occur
- Identify and flag discrepancies, inconsistencies, or risks
7. Systems & Process Improvement
- Continuously improve financial workflows and documentation practices
- Help refine chart of accounts and reporting structures as organization grows
- Ensure scalability of financial systems across programs and enterprises

Qualifications
Required
- 3–7 years of experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or financial operations
- Strong proficiency in QuickBooks
- Experience managing AP/AR and reconciliations independently
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple financial streams and priorities
Preferred
- Experience in nonprofit accounting
- Familiarity with restricted fund accounting
- Experience supporting audits or Form 990 preparation
