Mold Maker

1. General Overview:

This position will analyze specifications or mold/tool requirements, lay out fabrication processes, and create and repair plastic injection molds/components, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, gauges, and machinists' tools.

2. Responsibilities

• Responsible for setup and teardown of equipment.
• Do work on manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, saws and other general machines found in a typical machine shop.
• Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
• Identifies design errors, omissions, deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in mold design.
• Set up and operate a variety of conventional machine shop equipment (vertical mill, lathe, surface grinders, cutter grinders, etc.) and sinker EDM machines (Sodick CNC sinker EDM experience preferred but not required) to cut, turn, mill, drill, bore, and grind or otherwise shape work pieces to prescribed dimensions and finishes based on specifications Build molds from start to finish
• Possesses advanced manual machining skills including: milling contours, engraving; turning threads, boring pockets; grinding flats, diameters, shoulders, slots, and dressing radii Able to perform machining operations with a specified degree of accuracy and within a timely manner
• Smoothes flat and contoured surfaces, grinds and fits assemblies together and into mechanisms.
• Utilizes CAD/CAM, develops basic data, completes preliminary analysis for material sizing, and makes preliminary layouts, sketches and notes necessary to present design proposals rnal and external customers.
• Understanding basics of injection molding mechanics and mold function
• Able to machine / polish / surface grind / EDM stepped parting lines.
• Inspect finished molds for adequate surface finish, size requirements, profile conformity, and detection of defects
• Build and repair close tolerance mold components.
• Working knowledge of heat treatment processes for steel.
• Able to complete complex mold repairs and spot shutoffs.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

• Qualifications: 5 years of experience with tool and die/mold making
• Education Requirements: machinist or equivalent for tool design
