After-School Program Assistant

Position Overview

The After-School Care Assistant helps provide a safe, structured, welcoming, and Christ-centered environment for students participating in JCA’s after-school care program. This individual will actively supervise students, assist with activities and routines, and support the After-School Care Coordinator in the daily operation of the program.

Position Details

Reports To: After-School Care Coordinator
Status: Part-time, hourly
Schedule: Approximately 3:00–6:00 p.m. on regular school days
Pay Range: $15–$16 per hour, depending on experience

Essential Responsibilities

• Actively supervise students during all after-school activities.
• Assist with student check-in, attendance, and dismissal procedures.
• Ensure students are released only with approval from the After-School Care Coordinator.
• Help lead games, recreation, crafts, homework time, and other age-appropriate activities.
• Assist with preparing, serving, and cleaning up snacks.
• Reinforce program routines and clearly established behavior expectations.
• Redirect minor student behavior and report repeated or serious concerns to the Coordinator.
• Build positive and appropriate relationships with students.
• Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe program environment.
• Closely supervise students during indoor and outdoor activities.
• Immediately report injuries, safety concerns, or unusual incidents to the Coordinator.
• Follow JCA procedures related to student safety, emergencies, confidentiality, and authorized pickup.
• Support the Christian mission and hospitality of JCA through interactions with students, families, and coworkers.
• Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous experience working with children preferred.
• Ability to supervise and positively engage school-aged students.
• Dependable, punctual, patient, and able to follow established procedures.
• Ability to communicate appropriately with students, families, and coworkers.
• Ability to receive direction and work effectively as part of a team.
• Ability to maintain student and family confidentiality.
• Willingness to complete required background checks and training.
• CPR, First Aid, mandatory reporter, or other applicable certifications must be obtained and maintained as required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to actively supervise children indoors and outdoors.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the program area for extended periods.
• Ability to lift or move supplies and equipment weighing approximately 25 pounds.
• Ability to respond quickly during student, safety, or emergency situations.

Success in this position means that students are safe, engaged, treated with care, and consistently supervised—and that the After-School Care Coordinator receives dependable support in carrying out the daily program.
