The Lead Machinist is a working lead responsible for keeping all machining operations running smoothly on the shop floor. This role runs CNC machines while also serving as the first point of contact for machinists with technical and process questions. The Lead Machinist ensures equipment uptime, supports production schedules, and assists the Machine Shop Manager with tasks such as material ordering and work order creation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate and set up CNC machines, producing highquality precision parts to specification.
- Troubleshoot and resolve machine or tooling issues to minimize downtime.
- Serve as the goto resource for machinists, answering technical questions and providing handson support.
- Monitor daily production schedules to ensure jobs are completed on time.
- Collaborate with the Machine Shop Manager to prioritize work orders and allocate resources effectively.
- Assist with ordering raw materials, tooling, and consumables to prevent production delays.
- Create and update work orders in the scheduling system when needed.
- Train and mentor machinists on machine setup, operation, and safety practices.
- Perform inprocess and final quality checks to verify parts meet specifications.
- Promote and enforce shop safety, cleanliness, and organization standards.
- Provide feedback to the Machine Shop Manager on process improvements, tooling, and resource needs.
- Schedule and coordinate parts with outside vendors to ensure availability when needed.
- Serve as the goto resource for rework/modification of parts for production floor.
Qualifications:
- 5 years of machining experience with CNC mills and/or lathes.
- Strong setup and operating skills with proven ability to produce precision parts.
- Solid troubleshooting skills for machine, tooling, and process issues.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and technical drawings.
- Knowledge of raw materials, tooling, feeds/speeds, and machining best practices.
- Leadership skills with ability to mentor and support a team.
- Basic computer skills for scheduling and work order entry.
