The Joplin Family YMCA is seeking dependable, positive role models to serve as After School Program Assistants in our YMCA After School Program. This position is a great opportunity for individuals pursuing education, child development, recreation, or related fields, as well as those with experience working with children who want to gain valuable experience in youth development.
As an After School Program Assistant, you will support the daily operations of a YMCA After School location by assisting the Site Director, engaging with children, helping implement activities, and creating a safe, structured, and welcoming environment.
Position Summary
The After School Program Assistant supports the daily operation of a YMCA After School Program located at an elementary school in Joplin, Webb City, or Carl Junction. Working under the direction of the Site Director and YMCA Child Care Director, this position assists with child supervision, daily activities, attendance, documentation, and maintaining a safe and positive program environment. The After School Program Assistant supports YMCA policies, program expectations, and Missouri child care licensing requirements.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age, as required by Missouri child care licensing regulations.
- Must successfully pass required background screenings, including fingerprinting and DESE eligibility requirements.
- Must obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Certification within the required timeframe.
- Must complete required child care training within the required timeframe.
- Must complete annual required continuing education and professional development.
- Must demonstrate strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Must be able to maintain accurate records and complete required documentation.
- Must attend required staff meetings and trainings.
Preferred Skills & Certifications
- CPR/AED and First Aid Certification preferred.
- Experience working with elementary-aged children in a school, child care, camp, or youth program setting.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work positively with children, families, school personnel, and coworkers.
- Ability to support positive behavior guidance strategies consistent with YMCA expectations.
- Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Site Director with daily After School Program operations and activities.
- Supervise children at all times while maintaining a safe, engaging, and supportive environment.
- Assist with implementing activities that promote learning, creativity, physical activity, and social development.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and required program documentation.
- Communicate professionally and positively with children, families, school personnel, and YMCA staff.
- Support behavior guidance practices consistent with YMCA policies, school expectations, and Missouri child care licensing standards.
- Set up, maintain, and clean activity areas, program materials, and supplies.
- Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming program environment.
- Follow YMCA policies, safety procedures, health requirements, and Missouri child care licensing regulations.
- Assist with emergency procedures and safety protocols as needed.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
- Work collaboratively with the Site Director and other program staff to support a successful after-school program.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Site Director or Child Care Director.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to actively supervise children in indoor and outdoor environments.
- Must be able to stand, walk, sit, bend, squat, kneel, and participate in activities with children.
- Must be able to lift or carry up to 20 pounds, including program supplies and equipment.
- Must be able to respond appropriately to safety concerns and emergencies.
Work Hours
- Monday–Thursday: 2:30 PM–6:00 PM
- Friday: varies based on program location
- Additional hours may be required for staff meetings, trainings, program preparation, and other YMCA-required responsibilities.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour
