What are the responsibilities and job description for the Specimen Processor position at Jones Memorial Hospital?
Position Summary: Processes multiple specimens and accompanying requisitions for drop-off specimens as they come into the Laboratory. Understands and facilitates the flow of both specimens and information into and through the Laboratory so that all testing is properly ordered, delivered to department areas and tested. Has functioning knowledge of the flow of reports from the Laboratory to medical offices. Most processing involves intensive use of HIS/LIS system for placing orders, retrieving results as requested and adding notation to same. Properly process Pathology and other samples for transport to URMC reference Laboratory.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive, verify, and process all incoming outpatient and internal laboratory samples, ensuring proper labeling and matching orders.
- Assess specimen integrity, apply rejection criteria when necessary, and prepare samples for testing or transport to reference laboratories.
- Utilize the HIS/LIS system extensively for placing orders, retrieving results, and adding notations.
- Communicate proactively with collection areas, medical offices, and nursing personnel to clarify issues, request new collections, and confirm specimen requirements.
- Distribute samples to appropriate Laboratory departments, noting specific handling needs and priority levels (STAT, URGENT).
- Manage problem specimens, including documenting issues ("SPROB"), making follow-up calls, and addressing items in the "Problem bucket."
- Assist with answering the Lab phone and managing inpatient draw worklists.
- Organize requisitions, batch lists, and aliquot labels for efficient processing and filing.
- Perform phlebotomy duties and assist with training new lab personnel as needed.
- Review daily worklists ("JALL," "SOFTMIC," "JPROB") to ensure all specimens are accounted for and issues are resolved.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; up to one year of schooling in a medically related area preferred.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Strong computer skills are essential.
- Clerical and medical terminology background is desirable.
