What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vineyard Worker position at Jonathan Edwards Winery?
Vineyard employee will perform the following duties: Fruit thinning, leafing, suckering, hoeing, leaf pruning, repairing wire mesh and trellis as needed, harvesting, driving machinery, assisting with crop spraying and other related viticultural duties. Wine grape harvest duties include the use of a knife to cut grape bunches off of the grape vines to be placed in a tub. The tub is loaded onto a tractor/truck for transport to the crush pad. Pre-harvest maintenance includes leaf picking, crop thinning, field recording and grape analysis to project harvest dates. Employee may be cross trained to work in the Cellar as needed, but primary function will be in the vineyard.
Must have prior agricultural experience or some level of education regarding grape growing and a passion to learn. Employee must be able to lift up to 65 pounds frequently. Cannot be color blind due to the need to distinguish the colors of crops. Able to stoop, bend and work in cold and rainy conditions. This position is mainly an outdoor, year round, agricultural position, so working in inclement weather is expected. Employer has some gear, but employee will need to provide themselves with the appropriate weather garments. Able to use tools such as pruning shears, grape knives, hand saws, weed eaters, hedgers and shovels. Safety and training provided by employer. Proficiency in English required.
