POSITION SUMMARY

The Director - Tax leads the company’s tax function and is responsible for all federal and state income tax compliance, the tax balance sheet and income statement, and the quarterly and annual tax provision under ASC 740, including related financial statement disclosures. This role oversees indirect taxes such as state and local tax requirements involving  property taxes, sales tax,  use tax  and excise tax matters. The Director – Tax also supports operational and transactional tax issues and develops and implements tax planning and minimization strategies. The Director -Tax reports to the Senior Vice President – Chief Accounting Officer in the Denver office. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage federal and state income tax compliance, including management of data gathering and review and preparation of K-1 statements in a timely manner.
  • Manage all state and local tax filings, including property, sales and use tax and excise taxes.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the accounting team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Effectively communicate complex tax concepts to non-tax professionals, including the executive team.
  • Coordinate professional services, as needed.
  • Prepare and/or manage preparation of depletion and depreciation calculations, including systems improvement and interface.
  • Develop, research, and document tax issues, federal and state.
  • Support corporate M&A activities, manage or assist with tax due diligence, assist in integrating tax issues with accounting for acquisitions, divestitures, and corporate restructurings. 
  • Oversee and ensure accurate quarterly and annual tax provision under ASC 740, including tax calculations, journal entries, financial statement disclosures and tax account reconciliations, as necessary.
  • Manage income tax audits, direct responses to tax audits, inquiries, and notices, coordinating with external advisors as necessary.
  • Manage property tax review, protest, and accounting requirements.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of tax database, including documentation of technical tax positions taken and alternatives considered.
  • Research and support tax related matters as necessary to support other business functions of the company
  • Work with Treasury and FP&A group to integrate necessary tax related items into budget and forecast.
  • Develop and execute tax planning initiatives to optimize the company’s effective tax rate and cash tax position.
  • Assist in maintenance of and procedures to comply with requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley Rule 404.
  • Maintain respectful and productive working relationships within and across all work groups, ensuring effective collaboration and cooperation.

  • Drive continuous improvement in tax processes, systems and documentation to increase accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Monitor tax law changes and assess their impact on the company.
  • Perform other duties and projects assigned to support the success of the department and company

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of direct reports, providing regular feedback and performance evaluations. 
  • Delegate tasks effectively and ensure timely completion of team deliverables. 
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and workload distribution within the team.
  • Support employee development through coaching, training, and career growth opportunities.
  • Address performance issues and implement corrective actions when necessary. 
  • Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training of new team members. 
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment aligned with company values.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and internal controls.

 

Qualifications:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  • Comprehensive understanding of U.S. federal, state, and local tax laws, including corporate income tax, partnership taxation, and indirect taxes (property, sales, and use tax).
  • Knowledge of tax research methodologies and strong analytical skills to interpret complex tax regulations and legislative changes to apply to specific fact patterns.
  • Strong familiarity with ERP, financial reporting systems, and tax technology tools used for provision, compliance and data management.
  • Understanding of financial accounting and GAAP, including tax impacts on the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow.
  • Solid tax knowledge of oil and gas, upstream accounting, production-related tax issues.
  • Strong ability to analyze, apply, and communicate tax concepts, including complex or ambiguous tax positions.
  • Break down complex tax and financial issues, assess risk, identify solutions, and support business decisions.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills to motivate and support directs reports performance and professional growth.
  • Skilled at managing multiple deadlines, coordinating large volumes of data, and delivering timely, accurate outputs.
  • Effectively partner and communicate technical tax issues clearly with various departments and groups throughout the company and as well as external consultants/auditors.
  • Evaluate the tax implications of business strategies and support planning, structuring, and optimization initiatives.
  • High accuracy in work products, documentation, provision calculations, and compliance activities.
  • Successfully operate on strategic level while operating in a detail oriented and “hand-on” environment.
  • Exceptional organizational skills to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects at once.
  • Flexible to navigate changes of a growing organization.
  • Work and learn independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; effectively converse with all levels of the company, customers, business associates

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s in Accounting or Finance.
  • Ten (10) years’ significant experience in the areas of corporate, partnership and LLC tax compliance.
  • Three (3) years’ public accounting experience.
  • Experience in Oil and Gas Exploration and Production.

The minimum qualifications listed above apply to the Director - Tax level. The posted compensation range includes both Director - Tax and Senior Director - Tax positions. Candidates will be hired at the appropriate level based on their experience, skills, and qualifications.

 

Jonah Energy determines the salary level for potential new employees by considering a candidate's experience, skills, and education, along with the position's work location, external market conditions and internal pay equity.

 

This position is eligible for a 9/80 hybrid work schedule after 30-days of employment. Work is performed at office on Tuesdays through Thursdays, remote work on Mondays and Fridays.
