What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pizza Maker/Shift Leader position at Johnny's New York Style Pizza?
Johnny’s New York Style Pizza in Cartersville, Georgia is hiring an experienced Pizza Maker and Pizza Cook for a combined Pizza Maker / Shift Leader role. This is a full-time position for a candidate who is first and foremost a skilled pizza cook — and who also brings the leadership presence and operational discipline to run a pizza kitchen shift independently when needed. If you can make an exceptional pizza and lead a kitchen team with confidence, we want to hear from you.
About Johnny’s New York Style Pizza — Cartersville, Georgia
Johnny’s New York Style Pizza has been locally owned and operated for 25 years and under the same local ownership here in Cartersville since 2013. We’re a franchise, but we run like a neighborhood restaurant — because that’s exactly what we are. Over the years we’ve remodeled, rebranded, and reinvested in our store because we genuinely care about our community and the experience we deliver, both for our guests and our team.
Our kitchen works with fresh produce, premium ingredients, and daily-made dough — so if you take pride in what comes out of a kitchen and value a positive workplace environment, you’ll fit right in. Our front and back of house actually get along. Drama is low, stability is high, and the people who work here tend to stay. We protect that environment and expect everyone we hire to do the same.
Pizza Cook Skills — The Foundation of This Role
This is a cook’s role before anything else. The right candidate lives on the pizza line and takes ownership of every pizza that comes out of the oven. Core pizza cook skills required include:
- Hand-tossing and hand-stretching fresh pizza dough to spec, every shift
- Topping and cooking pizzas using commercial stone ovens and wood peels with speed and consistency
- Managing multiple ticket orders simultaneously across dine-in, carryout, and delivery in a fast-paced pizzeria kitchen
- Scheduling and coordinating pizza cook times to hit expected ticket times across all order types
- Operating the cold side food line — sub sandwiches, salads, and appetizers — as needed
- Maintaining a clean, organized pizza station and pizzeria kitchen throughout every shift
- Performing opening, line maintenance, and closing duties for the pizza station
Candidates who advance to the final interview stage will be asked to demonstrate their pizza cook skills at our restaurant — stretching the dough, topping the pizza, and cooking it in our oven. Candidates without hands-on experience hand-tossing or hand-stretching pizza dough are encouraged to apply for other job listings we may have posted instead.
Shift Leader Responsibilities
The Shift Leader component of this role is about supporting the kitchen operation from the line — not from an office. Shift Leaders at Johnny’s keep the kitchen running smoothly, communicate effectively with management and front-of-house staff, and handle the operational details that keep the team focused on the food. Key shift leader responsibilities include:
- Opening and closing the pizza kitchen independently and unsupervised, following all pizzeria operational procedures
- Communicating proactively with restaurant management and front-of-house staff to ensure smooth service and accurate ticket times
- Holding the kitchen team accountable to food quality, consistency, and cleanliness standards during assigned shifts
- Maintaining prep list execution and ensuring stations are stocked and ready before and during service
- Assisting with food delivery check-ins and proper storage of incoming product as needed
- Identifying and communicating operational issues — equipment, inventory, staffing— to management promptly
Bonus Leadership Skills (Not Required, But a Plus)
Candidates who bring prior pizzeria or restaurant leadership experience beyond the line are highly valued. The following skills are not required but will be recognized in compensation:
- Experience with staff scheduling in a restaurant or pizzeria kitchen
- Inventory management and ordering experience — tracking par levels, placing orders, and managing vendor relationships
- Operational controls experience — opening and closing checklists, food safety compliance, kitchen organization systems
- Prior experience in a formal kitchen supervisor, shift lead, or assistant kitchen manager role
