Description

The purpose of this position is to lead the financial reporting, analysis, and compliance functions for ASHA and its affiliated entities. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information through oversight of multi-entity accounting activities, audits, and regulatory reporting. The Director develops internal controls, leads annual audits, manages federal tax compliance, and serves as a strategic partner to internal stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation and distribution of accurate, timely financial statements and management reports for ASHA and its affiliates, ensuring compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Oversee general ledger activity and financial close processes across multiple entities, including grant-funded programs and specialized reporting units.
  • Direct the annual audit process for all entities and special reporting programs, serving as the primary liaison with external auditors and coordinating the development of audited financial statements and supporting documentation.
  • Oversee and coordinate the totality of the audit work across cross-functional staff within and outside of finance involved in audit preparation to ensure accuracy and timeliness of information required for audit engagements.
  • Manage organizational tax compliance , including oversight of Form 990 filings, unrelated business income activities, FEC financial reporting, and adherence to applicable nonprofit tax regulations.
  • Ensure compliance and internal controls accounting, monitor emerging risks and guide the organization in interpreting donor restrictions, grant requirements, and evolving regulatory standards.
  • Monitor investment reporting and compliance, ensure adherence to ASHA’s approved investment policy and supporting cash flow forecasting, liquidity planning, and documentation of investment activity.
  • Supervise and develop the financial reporting team, foster a high-performance culture through coaching, professional development, and technical guidance.


Qualifications

Knowledge Typically Acquired Through

  • 8 years of progressively responsible related experience (experience in individual not-for-profit membership associations preferred)
  • 4 or more years of supervisory experience
  • Baccalaureate degree in accounting or business administration
  • CPA designation


Skills

  • Extensive knowledge on an accrual basis, cash basis, and tax basis accounting
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), and Financial Accounting Board (FASB) pronouncements, compliance requirements, including donor restrictions, grant compliance, and regulatory reporting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of grant administration and reporting, indirect cost proposal preparation, OMB A-133, and other related matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret, apply and document complex accounting guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and review audited financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) as it applies to 501(c)(6) and 501(c)(3) organizations and PACs.
  • Familiarity with FEC financial reporting and unrelated business income tax (UBIT) issues.
  • Strong working knowledge of tax-exempt organization taxation.
  • Strong working knowledge of ERP and financial reporting systems.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to model, forecast, and interpret complex financial data.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet tools; general fluency with modern productivity and reporting platforms.
