This role will be responsible for analyzing existing systems, developing and maintaining enterprise mainframe solutions, supporting integrations, and ensuring the stability of mission-critical applications. The position requires strong expertise in COBOL, NATURAL, JCL, and ADABAS within large-scale enterprise environments.
Primary Responsibilities
Senior Mainframe Developer – COBOL / NATURAL / ADABAS
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mainframe Developer to support the enhancement, maintenance, and modernization of complex legacy mainframe applications. This role will be responsible for analyzing existing systems, developing and maintaining enterprise mainframe solutions, supporting integrations, and ensuring the stability of mission-critical applications. The position requires strong expertise in COBOL, NATURAL, JCL, and ADABAS within large-scale enterprise environments.
Primary Responsibilities
- Analyze legacy mainframe applications and provide technical assessments, code reviews, logic analysis, and system documentation.
- Design, develop, enhance, and maintain COBOL and NATURAL applications supporting business and operational requirements.
- Develop and manage JCL jobs, batch processing workflows, and job scheduling activities.
- Support ongoing maintenance, system enhancements, and production support for critical mainframe applications.
- Troubleshoot application issues, job failures, system abends, and perform root cause analysis.
- Analyze ADABAS database structures, file layouts, and data access methods to support development and integration efforts.
- Develop and maintain data interfaces, file transfer processes, and system integrations between legacy and modern platforms.
- Participate in technical design reviews, code reviews, testing activities, and implementation planning.
- Create and maintain technical documentation including program specifications, job flows, data definitions, and system architecture artifacts.
- Support System Integration Testing (SIT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and deployment activities.
- Implement development standards, change management processes, version control, and performance optimization best practices.
- Collaborate with analysts, architects, and development teams to ensure reliable and scalable solutions.
- Extensive experience with COBOL development in enterprise mainframe environments.
- Strong expertise in NATURAL programming and JCL development.
- In-depth knowledge of ADABAS database architecture, file structures, and data access methods.
- Experience supporting and maintaining large legacy mainframe systems.
- Strong troubleshooting, debugging, and problem-solving skills for batch and online applications.
- Experience with system integrations, data feeds, file processing, and interface development.
- Proficiency with mainframe utilities, job scheduling, monitoring, and debugging tools.
- Strong technical documentation, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently while supporting multiple projects and technical teams.
- Experience with CICS and online transaction processing environments.
- Background supporting government, taxation, or revenue-related systems.
- Experience with mainframe modernization, migration, or transformation initiatives.
- Knowledge of mainframe security, source code management, and enterprise scheduling tools.
- Experience working within large-scale enterprise or public sector IT organizations.
