Job Summary:
General Atomics (GA) is one of the world’s leading resources for high-technology systems development. They are seeking a Technical Writer who will participate with management and engineering teams to develop comprehensive technical documents, ensuring effective communication of technical information to targeted audiences.
Responsibilities:
• Under general supervision, coordinates with assignments to determine appropriate timelines, content, and format for the development of comprehensive engineering/scientific technical documents.
• Under general supervision, develops detailed plans, statements of work, cost estimates and proposals for technical document production.
• Under general supervision, coordinates aspects of preparing technical documents, including editing, to meet specified content and deadlines, including changes/modifications.
• Under general supervision, coordinates the identification, accumulation, and analysis of appropriate technical information and data, including interviewing technical experts, observing processes, and researching and analyzing technical data and publications.
• May participate with engineering/scientific teams to resolve technical/operational issues.
• Serves as a specialist to management and customer by participating in technical documentation reviews and making customer related presentations as required.
• Under general supervision, may coordinate reproduction, release, distribution, and appropriate storage of documents.
• May represent the organization as a secondary or alternate contact on assigned project(s).
• May recommend new and/or modifications to documentation policies and procedures.
• May provide guidance in the document security classification process.
• May provide guidance and training to teams of experienced technical professionals.
• Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
• Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating practices and procedures.

Qualifications:
Required:
• Typically requires education or formal training equivalent to the completion of an associate's degree in a related discipline and six or more years progressive experience in a technical field. May substitute equivalent professional experience in lieu of education/training.
• Must demonstrate a comprehensive and thorough understanding of the engineering/scientific principles underlying the technology and a comprehensive and thorough understanding of technical document preparation.
• Must have excellent working knowledge of the development of technical manuals and documentation, including editing and choice of media.
• Must also have excellent working knowledge of computer-based tools in the production of technical documentation.
• Must possess the ability to develop, acquire, interpret and communicate engineering/scientific technical data.
• Must possess the ability to develop and communicate new concepts and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.
• Must possess the ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Must possess the ability to organize, schedule and coordinate work phases and determine the appropriate approach at the task or project level.
• Must possess leadership and organization skills in order to work with management and customers and represent the organization.
• Must possess the ability to identify issues and develop advanced solutions to a variety of complex technical and administrative problems.
• Ability to work both independently and lead in a team environment is essential as is the ability to work extended hours and travel as required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
Preferred:
• Two or more years of management/customer interface is a plus.
• Experience creating IETMs (Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals) for the military is highly desired.
• Experienced in developing XML-based technical documentation for aerospace and defense applications, with expertise in S1000D specifications and Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs).
• Experience with S1000D is highly desired, particularly in the creation and management of structured technical documentation in compliance with aerospace and defense standards.
