Job Details
We are a mid-sized California law firm (approximately 150 employees) seeking a Litigation Attorney to join our Insurance Defense practice. This role involves handling a diverse caseload of civil litigation matters on behalf of insurance carriers and insured clients. The ideal candidate is comfortable managing cases independently while collaborating within a team-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities
Manage a full caseload of insurance defense matters, including personal injury, premises liability, auto liability, and general negligence
Handle cases from inception through resolution, including trial preparation and trial
Draft pleadings, motions, discovery, and legal memoranda
Take and defend depositions (parties, witnesses, and expert witnesses)
Appear in California state and federal courts for hearings, conferences, and trials
Prepare for and attend mediations, arbitrations, and settlement conferences
Evaluate liability, damages, and case exposure; provide timely reporting to insurance carriers
Collaborate with partners, associates, and support staff to develop litigation strategies
Maintain compliance with California procedural rules and court deadlines
Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Active member in good standing with the State Bar of California
3–10 years of civil litigation experience (insurance defense strongly preferred)
Experience handling depositions, written discovery, and motion practice
Familiarity with California civil procedure and court systems
Trial experience or significant trial preparation experience preferred
Skills & Competencies
Strong legal writing and oral advocacy skills
Ability to independently manage deadlines and caseloads in a billable-hour environment
Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities
Strong client communication and reporting skills (particularly with insurance carriers)
High level of organization and attention to detail
Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across practice groups
