Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The RN PACU will be responsible for providing exceptional patient care during the immediate postoperative period, ensuring safe recovery from anesthesia, and monitoring patients' vital signs and overall condition. This role requires a strong background in acute care, critical care, and familiarity with various EMR/EHR systems such as Epic, Cerner, and Athenahealth. The ideal candidate will have experience working in hospital settings, surgical centers, or outpatient clinics, with a focus on patient assessment, airway management, medication administration, and aseptic techniques.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and assess patients' vital signs, oxygen levels, and overall condition during recovery from anesthesia.
- Administer medications and injections as prescribed, including IV infusions and sedation reversal agents.
- Maintain airway management and ventilator support when necessary.
- Perform physical examinations and evaluate patients’ responses to treatments.
- Document patient care accurately using EMR/EHR systems such as Epic, Cerner, or eClinicalWorks.
- Collaborate with surgical teams, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Manage post-operative pain using appropriate pain management protocols.
- Ensure infection control practices are strictly followed to prevent hospital-acquired infections.
- Educate patients and their families about post-discharge care plans including discharge planning and medication instructions.
- Assist with specimen collection/processing and laboratory testing procedures as needed.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations to maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Skills
- Extensive experience with EMR/EHR systems including Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, or similar platforms.
- Proficiency in airway management, ventilator use, IV insertion, catheter care, and aseptic technique.
- Strong knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, and medical terminology relevant to perioperative care.
- Experience administering injections, performing phlebotomy, and managing complex medication regimens including narcotics and sedation agents.
- Ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments including vital signs, physical examinations, and diagnostic evaluations.
- Familiarity with infection control protocols and sterile processing procedures.
- Skilled in managing acute pain and providing post-operative recovery support for diverse patient populations including pediatrics (neonatal ventilator) to geriatrics (dementia care).
- Knowledge of CPT coding for documentation purposes is a plus.
