Hearing Officer
Position Description:
The Hearing Officer is responsible for all matters relating to student discipline, safety, alternative/special programs, student transfers, student work permits, and appeals of student suspensions/expulsions. The Hearing Officer shall coordinate parent and student meetings and assignments of students to schools and programs.
Reports To:
Executive Director of Special Programs
Scope of Responsibility:
- Monitors compliance with all state and local discipline policies, Bulletin 741, and school safety regulations.
- Maintains active communication with social service agencies to ensure adherence to local, state, and federal student service guidelines.
- Collaborates regularly with the Executive Director of Special Programs on discipline procedures and safety matters.
- Serves as a liaison between traditional schools and alternative or special program placements.
- Supports schools in addressing student service needs, concerns, and disciplinary issues.
- Assists in identifying the need for special or alternative programs in collaboration with school and district personnel.
- Conducts suspension hearings and manages all related appeals within the district.
- Represents the Office of Student Support at disciplinary appeal hearings before the School Board.
- Partners with the Public Relations Officer, school/community committees, and media representatives to promote positive district initiatives.
- Conducts routine school visits to provide on-site support to administrators.
- Reviews and provides feedback on discipline plans for designated schools.
- Reviews student expulsion recommendations for compliance and appropriateness.
Supervision Components:
- Performs supervisory duties in alignment with district expectations.
- Complies with Louisiana laws related to student education, health, safety, and welfare.
- Maintains communication with school staff and multidisciplinary teams to resolve or mediate family-school-district concerns.
- Follow up with staff, parents, and administrators on matters affecting student well-being.
- Collaborates with colleagues to design and implement support plans for schools and families.
- Reviews, drafts, and recommends policies and programs that improve school climate and culture.
- Participates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of district policies and procedures.
