With a commitment to patient- and family-centered care, the Non- Certified Surgical Technician functions as a member of the intraoperative healthcare team. He/she performs specific tasks to assist the surgical team in ways that values the uniqueness of each individual and addresses the physical, psychological, emotional, and social needs of the diversity of patients served by Jefferson Health, and is competent to provide care for all patient populations. The Surgical Technician is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the sterile field. The Surgical Technician accurately and efficiently anticipates surgeon's needs intraoperatively by applying comprehensive knowledge of operative procedures, equipment, anatomy and surgeons preferences. The Surgical Technician works closely with all perioperative team members during the preoperative, intraoperative, and post-operative care of the surgical patient. The Surgical Technician – Non-Certified also supports decontamination and sterile supply area, and maintains courteous and professional interactions with the patients and staff.

Essential Functions
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High School Diploma/equivalent required.
Graduate of a surgical technician training program. Employee must obtain certification within 6 months of graduation date.
Staff who were employed to practice surgical technology by Jefferson Health on or before the effective date of PA Act 80 effective 12/29/2020 are not required to obtain certification
OR
Staff who were employed to practice surgical technology as the individual’s primary function in another health care facility at any time during the two years immediately preceding the effective date of PA Act 80 effective 12/29/2020 are not required to obtain a certification.
AND
Experience
One year previous OR experience preferred.

Job Description
Essential Functions
- Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
- Recognizes the patients, their family/designated care partner(s) in providing safe, compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient's personal preferences, priorities, needs, and cultural beliefs and values.
- Communicates with and supports the interprofessional team, patient, family and designated care partners.
- Inspects Operating Room (OR) for cleanliness and secures, sets up, and prepares OR equipment, instruments and supplies which are required for surgical procedures.
- Participates in team time out and is an active participant and advocate for patient safety and high quality care in the perioperative setting.
- Provides assistance with gowning and gloving of Surgical team including the Surgeon
- Assist with preparation of the sterile field including draping of the patient and maintaining sterile field integrity
- Gives a thorough report to relief personnel on status of procedure, instruments, materials, and any other pertinent information to insure a smooth transition of personnel during the surgical procedure.
- Counts all sharps, sponges and instruments with the circulating nurse prior to, during and after the surgical procedure. Follows the policy on how counts are performed, and initiates corrective action when count is incorrect
- Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
- Provides assistance in maintaining supplies and equipment available to ensure efficient unit operations.
- Helps maintain a safe, neat and clean environment to facilitate safe and effective patient care in the Operating Room.
