The Jefferson Educational Society (JES), Erie’s think tank for community progress, is seeking a dependable and hands-on Building Maintenance Assistant to support the upkeep, safety, and daily functionality of its facilities. This role helps ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for staff, members, speakers, and the public.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated, practical, and comfortable handling a range of general maintenance and facilities support tasks. This position works independently on routine responsibilities, coordinates with outside vendors as needed, and reports to the Vice President of Operations.
Building & Facilities Maintenance
- Perform general building maintenance and minor repairs (patching, basic fixes, fixture replacement, routine wear and tear).
- Assist with interior and exterior painting projects as needed.
- Monitor building conditions and report safety, maintenance, or functionality concerns.
- Help maintain the appearance of common areas, storage spaces, and exterior walkways.
- Monitor contracted services for landscaping, snow and ice removal, and seasonal maintenance.
- Communicate issues or follow-up needs with leadership and assist with vendor coordination.
Operations & Event Support
- Move, arrange, and store furniture, equipment, and supplies for events and meetings.
- Assist with event space setup and breakdown.
- Coordinate basic needs with vendors and contractors for larger repairs or specialized services.
- Track maintenance needs, tools, and supplies and alert leadership when replacements are needed.
- Perform additional maintenance-related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma with experience in building maintenance, facilities support, or a related field.
- Working knowledge of basic maintenance skills (minor repairs, painting, light carpentry).
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on safety and preventative maintenance.
- Ability to lift and move furniture, equipment, and supplies.
- Reliable, punctual, and flexible, including availability for occasional evening events.
- Comfortable coordinating with and monitoring outside vendors.
- Interest in civic engagement and alignment with JES’s mission.
- $18–$20 per hour (commensurate with experience)
- 10–15 hours per week
