Mental Health Co-Responder Clinician (SO)

The Mental Health Co-Responder Clinician (CRC) is part of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) Mental Health Co-Responder Team. The purpose of the Co-Responder program is to provide support for the JCSO in addressing behavioral health related matters in the community, with the goal of diverting these issues away from traditional law enforcement responses and reducing behavioral health-related calls for service. Co-Responders provide primary on-scene de-escalation and continue to resource the community through case management services after the crisis is resolved. The CRC’s main duties are to act as a first responder to mental health emergency calls for service with JCSO deputies. Provides clinical crisis interventions to individuals experiencing behavioral health emergencies. CRCs provide immediate evaluation of individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis and attempt to divert them from the criminal justice system and advise on appropriate level of care. CRCs are also responsible for resource navigation, preparing legal documentation for transfer of individuals to appropriate levels of care such as mental health holds (M1), court ordered mental health evaluations and emergency commitments for substance use. CRCs coordinate care with other community services to arrange plans after discharge from hospitals or jails and provide short-term case management to get individuals connected to other community care partners.

Salary Ranges from $33.71 to $50.55 per hour

Description:

• Responds to behavioral health calls for service with JCSO deputies and provides clinical crisis intervention services, assessment, evaluations, problem identification, and referrals to appropriate levels of care.
  
• Assists and/or executes appropriate mental health holds.
  
• Provides short-term case management with high-utilizing clients to identify problems, look for alternative care options and help solve problems alongside the client.
  
• Provides care coordination and follow-up with clients who are discharged from community agencies to ensure smooth transition back into the community.
  
• Provides clinical input on other team members’ cases.
  
• Maintains accurate and timely case management records.
  
• Provides on-going department wide or training on innovative interventions or improvements to responses to mental health calls.
  
• Participates in team meetings, in-service training, and clinical supervision as required.
  
• Participates in proactive, preventative community outreach to members of the community struggling with behavioral health concerns.
  
• Responsible for maintaining and vetting a network of resources and referral sources to meet the needs of the client population.
  
• Engages in community events to inform of Co-Responder services alongside JCSO deputies.
  
• Attends trainings pertinent to role.
  
• Other duties as assigned.

Required:

• Valid Colorado driver’s license at hire.
• Minimum of three years of experience in co-response or crisis work (e.g. hospitals, crisis centers, withdrawal management, inpatient psychiatric facilities, residential settings, or schools).
• Current license in good standing with the State of Colorado as a Psychologist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or a related field from an accredited institution.
• Ability to respond to telephone inquiries from team members or department personnel after scheduled working hours.
• Ability to respond to in-progress crisis situations and effectively communicate with team members, law enforcement and people in crisis.
• Co-responders are required to wear ballistic vests provided by JCSO while on-scene.
• The Co-Responder team operates seven days a week with coverage from 6:00 A.M. to 1:00 A.M. This position requires work outside of normal business hours, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred:

• Experience working and collaborating with law enforcement officials professionally.
• Experience or knowledge of law enforcement culture pertaining to chain of command and criminal justice system
• Knowledge and experience in helping individuals or families navigating serious persistent mental illness (SPMI), personality disorders and other conditions as outlined in the DSM-5.
• Experience with multidisciplinary teams and coordination of care regarding individuals and their families.
• Familiarity with case management and documentation of case notes.
• Certified Addiction Technician (CAT), Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) or Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) in addition to primary licensure.
