POSITION: Coordinator of Elementary Math and Science
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Elementary Instruction
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
EMPLOYMENT TERM: Minimum 261 days annually, pursuant to WV Code
- 18-5-45; extended employment terms may be establishedby JCBOE
SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with Jefferson County Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level to include stipend.
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Director of Elementary Instruction and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and JCBOE Evaluation Policy
JOB SUMMARY: The Elementary math and science Coordinator provides instructional leadership and program oversight for grades K–5 math and science education. The coordinator ensures alignment with state standards, district goals, and best instructional practices while supporting teachers, administrators, and students. This role emphasizes curriculum development, instructional coaching, assessment analysis, and continuous improvement to increase student achievement in math and science
MAJOR POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Instructional Leadership & Strategy
- In collaboration with the Director of Elementary Instruction, develop, communicate, and monitor a district-wide instructional vision aligned to state standards and local strategic priorities.
- Lead the creation, adoption, and implementation of K-5 curriculum in the areas of ELA, Social Studies, World Languages and Wellness; ensure vertical alignment and coherence (e.g. Unite with Numeracy, Math4Life, STEAM-minded WV).
- Be accountable for the design, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of grades 6-12 curriculum and instructional practices within assigned content areas.
- Establish annual performance benchmarks and monitor progress toward instructional improvement goals specific to assigned disciplines.
- Establish and maintain evidence-based instructional frameworks (e.g. numeracy models, inquiry-based STEAM best practices).
- Coordinate Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) in collaboration with Special Programs and support systems.
Assessment, Data, and Continuous Improvement
- Build capacity of instructional staff in the areas of math, science, the arts, and technology and computer science (K-5) to use data (state, local, classroom) for instructional decision-making and progress monitoring.
- Lead cycles of continuous improvement, including program evaluation, fidelity checks, and action planning that drive measurable outcomes.
- Prepare annual content-area reports summarizing instructional effectiveness, student achievement trends, and recommendations for continuous improvement.
Professional Learning & Talent Development
- Design a coherent professional learning system for teachers, principals, and support staff (annual PD calendar, institutes, job-embedded coaching).
- Facilitate communities of practice and leverage adult learning principles to improve classroom practice in the areas of math, science, the arts, and technology and computer science in grades K-5.
Curriculum Adoption & Resource Management
- Lead curriculum review and adoption processes, including stakeholder engagement, pilot reviews, vendor coordination, and board presentations.
- Ensure high-quality instructional materials selection, procurement, and distribution; monitor implementation fidelity and classroom use.
- Oversee digital learning resources and instructional technology integration in collaboration with IT and school leaders.
- In collaboration with the Director of Elementary Instruction, coordinate high quality instructional resources in the areas of math, science, the arts, and technology and computer science.
- Serve as the liaison for state-level curriculum initiatives, professional networks, and content-specific guidance.
Programs & Compliance
- Oversee and implement pilot program timelines and transition planning for newly adopted instructional materials and strategies.
- Ensure compliance in curriculum, assessment, and accountability-related reporting; prepare documentation for audits and state reviews.
- Support learning initiatives and transitions (Grades PK-K, 5-6).
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with the Director of Elementary Instruction to align resources and remove barriers to implementation.
- Partner with school administration and instructional staff to plan school improvement strategies, walkthroughs, and instructional feedback cycles.
- Engage families and community partners to support instruction, including communication about curriculum and student progress.
- Present as needed to JCS leadership and the Board of Education curriculum impact findings, instructional initiatives, outcomes, and recommendations.

Master’s degree in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, and/or math or science education. Successful K–12 teaching experience and responsible instructional leadership experience. Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate; Meet the qualifications outlined in WV Code §18A-3-2a.
Demonstrated expertise in curriculum design, assessment literacy, data-informed instruction, and adult professional learning.
Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage complex projects, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Deep knowledge of PK–12 content standards, instructional frameworks, assessment systems, and data practices.
- Excellent written and oral communication, presentation, and facilitation skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively
- Skill in coaching, observation/feedback, and building capacity of school leaders and teacher teams.
- Strong project management, organization, and management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Valid West Virginia Professional Certificate with the administrative endorsement preferred.
- Training or certification in MTSS, evidence-based math instruction, STEAM or inquiry-based instructional strategies
- Background in instructional technology integration and digital resource vetting.
