JOB SUMMARY
The position involves performing routine semi-skilled and technical construction inspection work for sewer, street, and other public works projects and programs. Assures compliance with Federal, State and local codes and standards and contractual provisions.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Reviews federal project development plans for compliance with codes, regulations, and standards adequate of applications for permits and compliance with approved plans.
- Coordinating the preparation of engineering plans and specifications, and coordinating the required projects for advertising for bids.
- Assists with preparation of sanitary sewer, water, and storm drainage designs.
- Inspects and approves all phases of public and private construction and improvement work to assure that the appropriate construction is completed in compliance with the plans, standards, specifications, special requirements, codes and regulations.
- Issues correction notices or approvals as required.
- Inspects and approves construction and installation of streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains, driveways, and related utilities and structures as assigned.
- Inspects construction work under excavation, clearing and grading permits.
- Inspects to assure compliance with local, State or Federal standards for any right-of-way, street use, other permits issued to private utilities or contractors.
- Coordinates activities and schedules with utility companies, contractors, property owners and other City departments.
- Resolves conflicts within scope of authority.
- Maintains regular contact with consulting engineers, construction project engineers, Federal and State Agencies.
- Assists with preparation for Capital Improvement Program Projects.
- Assures as-built records of projects, and documents necessary changes for the operation and maintenance programs.
- Checks for proper use and placement of traffic control devices to assure compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Transfers field notes and activity information into the official MODOT log book.
- Computes the pay items that have been completed for that period and record in the MODOT log book.
- Provides information and responds to inquiries from contractors, property owners, staff, and the general public regarding assigned public works projects.
- Verifies quantities and assists with contractor pay requests and change orders.
- Maintains a variety of logs and records related to employees, work assignments and inspection activities.
- Conducts wage interviews with contractor’s employees
- Prepares and posts pay estimates as required.
- Performs work in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
- Assists in the training of other County personnel in public works design and construction techniques.
- Acts as a liaison between the Private Contractor and the Engineer of the project and/or Residents effected.
- Compiles information and prepares construction reports as required.
- Reviews field staking and makes revisions within scope of authority.
- Serves as a member of survey crew for flagging, as needed.
- Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours.
- Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.
