What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist position at Jefferson County Health Center?
POSITION OVERVIEW: (non-exempt)
Performs general office procedures and/or collects biological specimens for analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Medical or secretarial education preferred
- Completion of phlebotomy training program/course
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Reports to Laboratory Manager
DIRECT REPORTS:
None
POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Greet outpatients in a friendly manner and put them at ease waiting to have their blood drawn.
- Answer the telephone promptly and courteously, answering questions, and directing questions to the appropriate person or department.
- Maintain the laboratory files in a neat and orderly manner. File completed reports in a timely manner.
- Collect biological specimens quickly and efficiently with minimum discomfort to the patient.
- Follow universal precautions when collecting specimens.
- Collect specimens in the correct tubes or containers.
- Label specimens correctly.
- Order tests correctly using the computer, referral lab requisitions, or other special forms.
- Deliver completed reports as necessary:
- Mail completed reports to doctor offices.
- Fax reports as needed.
- Call results as requested.
- Complete monthly reports and check monthly referral test bills as directed.
- Serve on various committees and perform other duties as designated.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment
- May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities
- Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases
- Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury
- Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards
- Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use
- Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury
- Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations
Location: Jefferson County Health Center · Lab
Schedule: Full Time, Evenings, Monday-Friday: 1:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.| every 5th weekend | no holidays
