What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mid to Senior Mechanical Design Engineer position at Jarrett Engineering?
🌱 About Jarrett Engineering
Jarrett Engineering designs and delivers real-world mechanical solutions for manufacturing environments; equipment, automation systems, and tooling that must perform reliably, efficiently, and economically.
As our partnerships expand, we’re investing in experienced design talent to support increasing project complexity and throughput. This role is part of our long-term growth strategy, not a short-term fill.
🛠️ The Role
We’re looking for a mid to senior-level mechanical designer who understands how industrial equipment is built, assembled, and paid for.
This role blends:
- Mechanical equipment design
- Industrial automation support
- Fixtures and tooling
- Detailed manufacturing documentation
You’ll be expected to think beyond “can it work?” and into “can it be built efficiently, maintained easily, and delivered within budget?”
🔩 Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical equipment, automation systems, and fixtures/tooling from concept through release
- Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production-ready drawings
- Apply DFM/DFA principles to control cost, complexity, and manufacturability
- Balance performance, durability, and simplicity in design decisions
- Collaborate with engineers, machinists, integrators, and project managers
- Support prototype builds, troubleshooting, and design refinement
- Participate in client-facing technical discussions when appropriate
- Contribute to improving internal design standards and workflows
âś… Experience & Technical Expectations
This role is intentionally above entry-level.
- ~3-5 years of professional mechanical design experience
- Demonstrated experience with:
- Industrial machinery or equipment
- Automation-adjacent mechanical systems
- Fixtures, tooling, or production support equipment
- Strong CAD proficiency (SolidWorks preferred; equivalent accepted)
- Comfortable producing complete drawing packages including assemblies, detail drawings and pneumatic schematics (tolerances, GD&T, BOMs)
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes (machining, fabrication, assembly)
- Proven ability to design with cost, simplicity, and lead time in mind
🧠Core Traits We’re Targeting
This is where the right candidates lean in:
- Manufacturing-Minded Designer—You design for the shop floor, not just the screen
- Cost-Conscious Thinker—You naturally simplify designs without sacrificing function
- Independent Problem Solver—You don’t require step-by-step direction but readily accept and consider input from team members.
- Detail-Oriented—You care deeply about drawings, tolerances, and build quality
- Steady Under Pressure—You've been through design changes, deadlines, and real-world constraints
- Growth-Oriented—You want to help shape a growing engineering firm
🚀 Why Jarrett Engineering
- Direct involvement in meaningful industrial projects
- Increasing workload driven by real client demand, not speculation
- Opportunity to influence how the design process evolves as the company scales
- A team that values experience, practicality, and ownership
- Long-term growth path toward senior or lead design responsibility
