Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe is seeking an enthusiastic Community Garden Assistant to join our Culture Department! This is a part-time, seasonal position (20 hours per week), working closely with the Community Garden Manager to ensure the health, beauty, and productivity of our tribal community garden.

This is a hands-on role perfect for a team player who enjoys working outdoors and is passionate about sustainable gardening, food sovereignty, and community engagement. You will play a vital role in maintaining the garden’s physical space while helping to facilitate cultural and educational events that bring our community together.

 

As a Community Garden Assistant, you will:

  • Be responsible for garden upkeep and maintenance through weeding, watering, pruning, deadheading, mulching, edging, raking, and fertilization
  • Perform appropriate soil preparation and planting procedures
  • Report plant pests and control as directed
  • Clean, and use hand tools and equipment when applicable
  • Assist the Community Garden Manager with special event planning in collaboration with the Traditional Foods and Culture Program, plan and host social gatherings and educational workshops (ie. Waking of the garden, work parties, harvest parties, and putting garden to rest) when applicable
  • Be responsible for the general oversight of a seasonal assistant(s)

 

What are the Required Qualifications for this position?

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, Associates degree in Horticulture or related field preferred
  • One (1) year of relevant experience
  • Basic computer and Microsoft Program skills including Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including effective verbal and written communication
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse economic, cultural, and social backgrounds
  • Ability to travel locally and regionally as assigned
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License
  • Must be able to successfully pass criminal background investigation

  • Demonstrate initiative, work independently with little supervision
  • American Indian/Alaska Native preferences apply

 

What are the Physical Requirements and Working Conditions for this position?

  • Must have manual dexterity to grasp and operate yard equipment such as chain saws, lawnmowers, weed eaters, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside in various weather conditions, through all seasons
  • Must be available to work any shift (to include all hours, weekends, and/or holidays as job duties require)
  • Must be able to lift, push and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted
  • Physical ability to access all areas of the property applicable to your position
  • Must be able to withstand prolonged standing, sitting, walking, bending, climbing, squatting and twisting without restriction
  • Requires eye/hand coordination and manual dexterity; ability to distinguish letters, numbers and symbols
  • Must have the ability to reach at or below/above shoulder level on a continuous basis
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, busy, and somewhat stressful environment and maintain physical stamina, proper mental attitude while dealing effectively with customers, management, team members, and outside contacts while working under pressure and meeting deadlines

 

 

Salary : $17 - $21
