MECHANICAL ENGINEER
The City of Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Engineer. The BPU is a full-service utility provider serving residents and businesses in Jamestown, NY and surrounding communities with electric, water, wastewater, solid waste and district heating services.
Applicants must have graduated from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and possess four years of full-time paid experience in Mechanical Engineering work, or have graduated from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate in Science Degree, with major in Engineering Science, Math or Physics, and eight years of full-time paid experience in Mechanical Engineering work.
This person in this position performs moderately difficult mechanical engineering work for the Electric Generating Power Station. The incumbent plans work and carries out administrative, supervisory and engineering tasks to ensure the efficient delivery of services. Considerable leeway is allowed for the exercise of independent judgement in the planning of work details and in making technical decisions. General direction is provided by the Power Plant Manager.
This position requires supervision over the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and system in the Electric Generating Power Station and requires a thorough knowledge of the modern methods, principles, techniques and practices of mechanical engineering as applied to the design, installation and operation of mechanical equipment in an electric generating power station. The person in this position details and lays out alterations or additions to fossil fuel electric generating power station equipment and systems, including steam boilers, steam turbines, pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, instruments, controls, cooling towers, and interconnecting piping systems. The incumbent performs responsible technical work in the design and preparation of working drawings of mechanical systems for new and existing systems, makes field surveys and sketches as required to determine type, size and proper design of mechanical equipment, and monitors consultant and contractor performance and cost control of assigned projects. Assistance in the preparation of specifications for mechanical equipment for use in investigation and testing of construction and maintenance materials, preparing bid documents and complex cost estimates and securing permits is also required.
The person in this position must possess the ability to make difficult mathematical computations and designing moderately difficult mechanical engineering systems; supervise moderately difficult engineering projects in the field and ensure adherence to plans and specifications; make complete field surveys and obtain sufficient data for use in drafting plans and specifications for desired improvement; and assist in important research or investigational work of a technical nature. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.
The BPU offers a competitive benefit package. The salary range for this position is between $76,050 to $114,075.
The position of Mechanical Engineer falls in the Competitive Class of the Civil Service Commission Classification Plan. All applicable rules and regulations of the New York State Civil Service Commission (including all local rules and regulations) shall apply to this position.
