Garden Center Associate

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Garden Center Horticulture and Retail Associate provides operational and retail support for the Garden Center. Retail Assistants are expected to provide care for and to display plants, serve customer needs and checkout. A passion for plants and landscaping is necessary to ensure the upkeep of high quality products and to provide knowledge for the customers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Training

• Completes and maintains all required State mandated trainings such as, Universal Precautions, CPR / First Aid, Signs & Symptoms of Illness & Injury and Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals (BHDDH) CORE trainings within 90 days of employment;
• Attends meetings and training sessions as required by BHDDH and JLMC;

Daily Programing

•  Create and maintain displays of a variety of plants for sale in the Maher Garden Center;
• Assist in the growing and development of plants in the green houses;
• Maintains healthy nursery stock;
• Assists in opening and closing Garden Center;
• Assist customers in selection and movement of products, and meet customer needs;
• Checkout customers when making sales;
• Assists with Customer loading (hard goods and plant material)
• Assists with unloading of shipments;
• Work with volunteers and students to create beautiful plantings and displays on Maher Center campus and local Adopt-a-Spot;
• Contribute to development and execution of themed promotions and events as needed;
• Promote a healthy and safe environment while making positive contributions to workplace culture;
• Ensures each individuals’ rights are protected;
• Treats individuals with dignity and respect;

Activities of Daily Living

• Observes individuals for any changes in behavior or health and reports changes to Garden Center Manager and the delegating nurse;

Communication

• Observes individuals for evidence of injury or bruises and evaluates for changes in emotional and physical status;
• Reports any noted problems to the Garden Center Manager immediately and complete a written incident report form;
• Reports all medical related incidents to the Garden Center Manager and the delegating nurse;
• Acts as a representative for James L. Maher Center in a professional manner when required, to families, service coordinators, State officials, community partners, local businesses, and employers;
• Represents James L. Maher Center in a professional manner to families, service coordinators, State officials, and community partners when required;
• Maintains participant confidentiality;

Teamwork

• Treats all individuals and coworkers and with dignity, respect, and fairness;
• Provides support to other team members when individuals are having behavioral issues;

Documentation

• Ensures that all documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner;
• Clocks in and out before and after every shift and submits Leave Request forms when applicable;

Safety

• Assists individuals when entering and exiting vehicles, as well as entering and exiting the building safely;
• Reports unsafe conditions, environment, and equipment to the Garden Center Manager;
• Follows safety protocols to foster a safe working environment;

All other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

• Valid driver’s license Ability to drive company vehicles. Ability to lift/push/pull 50lbs.
• A favorable National Criminal Background check along with OIG clearance
• High School Diploma or GED, trade school, or industry-specific certificate desired but not required
• 1-2 years’ experience in horticulture, preferably in a garden center setting preferred, but not required
• Must be at least 18 years of age

Reports to: Garden Center Manager

Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour
