 We are hiring a Special Education & Assessment Coordinator!

The Barry Robinson Center is a residential treatment facility serving military-connected youth ages 11–17. Our Center provides a holistic, therapeutic environment that helps youth and their families begin the path to healing, growth, and long-term success.

The purpose of the Special Education and Assessment Coordinator is to provide comprehensive educational assessments, progress monitoring, and special education support services to students, including administering standardized assessments and tracking performance to improve student outcomes.

Location & Schedule:
Onsite at The Barry Robinson Center, 443 Kempsville Road Norfolk, VA 23502
Full – Time, Monday through Friday from 7:45am - 3:30pm.

Education & Experience Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, special education preferred.
  • Master’s degree preferred, special education preferred.
  • Three or more years of teaching experience, preferably in special education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Educational Assessment
    1. Review prior school records and assessment results before testing each student.
    2. Determine whether educational testing is indicated and if so, complete it within 20 days of admission.
    3. Administer and score the Woodcock-Johnson V Tests of Achievement using the WJ-V scoring program.
    4. Produce evaluation reports that include scores, anecdotal observations, and recommendations.
  2. Progress Monitoring & Scheduling
    1. Track student progress using the Edgenuity online platform and make recommendations as needed.
    2. Assist in developing individualized schedules for students in unique situations, such as those pursuing a GED, completing high school credits, or preparing for college coursework.
    3. Review student’s midterm and quarterly grade reports. For students who are struggling in one or more subjects, meet with Teacher(s) to see if additional interventions are indicative and make recommendations accordingly, then document in student record.
  3. Special Education Support
    1. Maintain working knowledge of each special education student’s IEP, including accommodations, modifications, academic and behavioral goals, and key dates (IEP duration and triennial review dates).
    2. Contact home schools (LEAs) regarding upcoming IEP due dates and document all contact in student records.
    3. Assist in developing IEPs in collaboration with BRC teaching staff, home schools representatives, and parents.
    4. Ensure student IIPs accurately reflect special education status, IEP accommodations, goals, and other relevant information.
    5. Identify general education students who may benefit from special education services or a 504 Plan and make appropriate referrals.
    6. May need to substitute for other Education staff members at times.
  4. Consultation & Collaboration
    1. Meet with individual teachers to address questions about special education students and recommend classroom interventions.
    2. Facilitate team problem-solving meetings for students who are struggling in the BRC school program.
  5. Training & Meetings
    1. Attend departmental meetings and share relevant testing updates and information.
    2. Attend testing- and student needs-related training and provide training to departmental and BRC staff on testing processes and special education topics as needed.
