What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director of Education position at JAMES BARRY-ROBINSON INSTITUTE?
We are hiring an Assistant Director of Education. This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Director of Education.
The Assistant Director of Education serves as the second-in-command of the BRC Education department and a key member of educational leadership. This position shares responsibility with the Director of Education for the quality, compliance, and effectiveness of BRC Educational Services within the parameters of Licensing, Accreditation, and Payer contract requirements. The Assistant Director assumes full departmental leadership in the absence of the Director.
Function: Oversees daily educational operations by supervising staff, supporting instruction, and ensuring compliance with academic, behavioral, and documentation standards.
Education & Experience Minimum Qualifications
- Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in Education required; licensure in Special Education or Administration & Supervision strongly preferred.
- Five (5) or more years’ teaching experience, preferably in special education setting.
- At least one (1) year of administrative, supervisory, or lead teacher experience.
- Excellent organization, writing and proof-reading skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage competing priorities, and represent the department with professionalism.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership, Supervision & Departmental Operations
- Serve as acting Director of Education in the absence of the Director, maintaining full operational and programmatic continuity.
- Assist in the supervision and professional development of all Education department personnel, including onboarding, performance monitoring, and annual evaluation processes.
- Develop and implement structured schedules for staff observations, individual supervision, and team meetings to promote accountability and professional growth.
- Ensure all departmental staff maintain current documentation, lesson plans, and grade records in accordance with BRC standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain a well-organized, trauma-informed, and positive learning environment across the department.
Compliance, Quality Assurance & Policy Implementation
- Assist the Director in ensuring ongoing compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, licensure, accreditation standards, and TRICARE payer requirements.
- Support the implementation and monitoring of education department policies, procedures, and outcome measurement systems.
- Assist in developing and delivering an annual training plan that meets or exceeds required training hours and addresses content relevant to BRC's student population.
- Ensure educational goals and programming are aligned with BRC's overall clinical framework, with particular emphasis on trauma-informed care practices.
- Coordinate Standards of Learning (SOL) testing for Virginia students, from test requests through administration and return.
- Coordinate related services, including speech-language pathology and occupational therapy, encompassing provider scheduling, HR compliance documentation, interdepartmental, and parent/guardian communication.
Program Development & Strategic Contribution
- Collaborate with the Director of Education on curriculum development, program review, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Oversee the Experiential Learning Experience (ELE) program, ensuring meaningful hands-on lesson planning, ongoing review, and alignment with student treatment goals.
- Contribute to department-level strategic planning and assist in advancing key initiatives that align with BRC’s organizational goals.
- Participate in business development activities and represent BRC as a private school in partnership with Norfolk Public Schools and other external education partners.
- Support positive behavioral management systems and assist with de-escalation and conflict resolution across the department.
- Assist in providing recognition and support for departmental staff.
Student, Family & Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Build and sustain rapport with students, supporting a safe and encouraging learning environment that reflects BRC’s therapeutic milieu.
- Ensure monthly parent/guardian contact is made and documented within each student’s educational record.
- Serve as a resource and point of contact for parents, guardians, and outside agencies regarding educational matters.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, departmental meetings, and clinical team meetings as required, both on and off campus.
- Maintain regular, proactive communication with Residential, Clinical, Nursing, and other departments to ensure coordinated care.
- Support student transitions by coordinating the transfer of educational records and information with receiving schools and outside agencies.
- Assist with educational outings, special campus events, and staff training on education-related topics.
