Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The Biotechnology (Chemistry Track) faculty member provides instruction across biotechnology and chemistry courses within both transfer and applied science pathways. The position supports students in mastering foundational and applied laboratory skills, including chemical analysis, instrumentation, and bioprocess techniques.
Faculty are responsible for curriculum design, assessment, and integration of hands-on, inquiry-based laboratory experiences that align with industry expectations and prepare students for roles in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical manufacturing settings.

Core Responsibilities
  • Teach lecture and laboratory courses in chemistry and biotechnology within transfer and applied science programs.
  • Develop, revise, and assess curriculum to ensure alignment with program, transfer, and industry standards.
  • Incorporate active, inquiry-based learning and hands-on lab experiences that reinforce applied scientific skills.
  • Advise and mentor students on academic planning, transfer options, and career pathways in biotechnology and chemistry fields.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, advisory committees, and industry partners to maintain program relevance and alignment with workforce needs.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to departmental assessment, program review, and college service activities.
  • Integrate technology and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) to enhance student engagement and success.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong content knowledge in chemistry and biotechnology principles, instrumentation, and laboratory methods.
  • Ability to design and deliver engaging, student-centered instruction in diverse learning environments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity-minded teaching and serving a diverse student population.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and external partners to support program development and student success.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry; or
  • Master’s degree in a related discipline with at least eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in Chemistry.
  • Ability to successfully complete the college’s pre-employment security screening.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and teaching experience across multiple chemistry or biotechnology course levels, including introductory and advanced topics emphasizing life science applications.
  • Experience developing curriculum that integrates experiential, inquiry-based, and lab-centered learning.
  • Experience advising and mentoring students on academic planning, transfer opportunities, and industry engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with industry partners and work effectively in interdisciplinary instructional environments.
  • Proficiency with learning management systems and instructional technologies to enhance the student experience.
  • Strong communication skills and demonstrated success in working effectively with diverse, multicultural, and K–12 populations.
  • Prior teaching experience in chemistry, biotechnology, or a related applied science discipline.
