Residential Construction Estimator / Assistant Estimator
J.A.Y. Construction is a growing residential construction company serving New Jersey. We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Residential Construction Estimator / Assistant Estimator to assist with preparing estimates, takeoffs, proposals, and project pricing.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with construction knowledge who wants to grow into a larger estimating and project management role within an established company.
Responsibilities
- Review architectural plans, drawings, specifications, and project documents
- Perform material and labor quantity takeoffs
- Prepare detailed residential construction estimates
- Assist with pricing for roofing, siding, windows, doors, decks, framing, trim, additions, renovations, and other residential construction projects
- Contact suppliers and subcontractors for current pricing
- Compare subcontractor bids and material quotes
- Prepare detailed scopes of work and customer proposals
- Maintain estimating spreadsheets, pricing databases, and project files
- Assist with site measurements and project walk-throughs
- Work directly with the company owner to review estimates before proposals are submitted
- Assist with change orders and additional work pricing
- Help transition awarded projects from estimating into production
- Track estimated costs versus actual project costs to improve future estimating accuracy
Qualifications
- Some experience in residential construction, estimating, project coordination, or a related field is preferred.
- Basic ability to read and understand architectural plans and construction drawings.
- Familiarity with residential construction materials and methods.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Strong math, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Good communication skills and a professional attitude.
- Willingness to learn our estimating procedures, pricing methods, and construction processes.
- Ability to take direction, ask questions, and become more independent as experience grows.
- Prior estimating experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate with construction knowledge and a strong willingness to learn.
- Experience with roofing, siding, windows, doors, framing, decks, additions, or remodeling is a plus.
We are willing to train the right candidate. We are primarily looking for someone who has a basic understanding of residential construction, is dependable and detail-oriented, and wants to develop into a strong construction estimator.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who wants more than simply entering numbers into estimating software.
The right candidate will learn our estimating process and gradually take responsibility for preparing complete estimates from architectural plans, site measurements, supplier pricing, and subcontractor proposals.
Initially, estimates will be reviewed directly with the company owner. As the candidate gains experience, the position will have the opportunity to take on greater responsibility, including customer appointments, project estimating, and potentially project management.
Position
Full-Time
Monday through Friday
Compensation based on construction and estimating experience.
Paid training and opportunity for advancement.
A performance review will be conducted after approximately six months, with opportunities for increased compensation and responsibility based on performance.
