This is a hands-on shop leadership position responsible for keeping the fabrication floor organized, productive, and moving in the right direction every day.


The Shop Manager will directly manage shop employees, assign daily work, review timecards, monitor productivity, maintain shop organization, order consumables and supplies, coordinate equipment maintenance, and learn the operation of our CNC and fabrication equipment. The Shop Manager will also use Tekla PowerFab to help track production status, labor, material, and job progress.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the fabrication shop and make sure employees are working safely, productively, and on the correct priorities.
  • Supervise fitters, welders, parts personnel, machine operators, and other shop employees.
  • Assign daily work and make sure each employee understands what they are expected to complete.
  • Monitor employee performance, productivity, attendance, attitude, and shop behavior.
  • Review and approve timecards, correct missing or inaccurate time, and make sure labor is charged to the correct jobs.
  • Hold employees accountable for start times, breaks, production expectations, quality, and completion of assigned work.
  • Work directly with employees on the shop floor and help resolve questions, problems, and production issues as they come up.
  • Use Tekla PowerFab daily to review job status, production progress, material status, labor, and shop priorities.
  • Keep PowerFab information current and make sure it reflects what is actually happening in the shop.
  • Coordinate with Project Management, Purchasing, QC, and Shipping regarding current shop needs and priorities.
  • Confirm employees have the correct drawings, material, parts, hardware, and information before starting work.
  • Make sure material and fabricated pieces are properly identified, organized, staged, and kept with the correct project.
  • Manage shop consumables and supplies, including welding wire, gas, grinding wheels, saw blades, drill bits, tips, nozzles, PPE, and other regularly used shop items.
  • Monitor consumable inventory and order supplies before the shop runs out.
  • Learn the operation and basic troubleshooting of the shop’s CNC and fabrication equipment.
  • Become familiar with the capabilities, limitations, maintenance requirements, and production flow of each major machine.
  • Work with CNC operators and parts personnel to keep machines loaded with the correct work and minimize unnecessary downtime.
  • Make sure operators complete required machine inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and routine maintenance.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs and maintenance when machines are not operating correctly.
  • Keep the shop clean, organized, and free from unnecessary material, scrap, tools, and equipment blocking production areas.
  • Maintain organized material staging and make sure completed, incomplete, and hold material are clearly separated.
  • Monitor scrap and material drops and make sure usable material is not unnecessarily thrown away.
  • Make sure tools, welding machines, leads, clamps, rigging, forklifts, cranes, and other shop equipment are maintained and returned to the correct locations.
  • Coordinate forklifts and overhead cranes so material moves through the shop efficiently.
  • Monitor fabrication and welding workflow throughout the day and move employees or resources when one area becomes overloaded or falls behind.
  • Identify employees who need additional training and coordinate training on fitting, welding, drawings, equipment, CNC machines, or company procedures.
  • Assist with onboarding and training new shop employees.
  • Help interview and evaluate potential shop employees when needed.
  • Address employee issues early and communicate performance or disciplinary concerns to management.
  • Make sure incomplete, incorrect, or defective work is corrected before being passed to the next stage.
  • Coordinate with QC so completed fabrication is ready for inspection.
  • Coordinate with Shipping so completed material is properly staged and ready to load.
  • Maintain clear communication with management regarding employee issues, machine problems, material shortages, production delays, and other shop concerns.
  • Help establish the next day’s priorities before the end of each shift.
  • Take ownership of the overall organization, discipline, productivity, and condition of the shop.
