Assignment Editor
KITV/Island News is looking for a driven, detail-oriented Assignment Editor who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative newsroom. This position serves as the communication hub for our team — coordinating coverage, managing logistics, and helping shape the daily news agenda for our on-air and digital platforms.
The ideal candidate is organized, calm under pressure, and deeply connected to Hawai‘i’s communities. You should have strong editorial judgment, a passion for storytelling, and the ability to spot what matters most to our local audience.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily newsgathering efforts across all platforms — broadcast, digital, and social. This includes conducting interviews and posting web stories
- Plan and execute daily coverage; coordinate and communicate with reporters, photographers, and producers.
- Monitor e-mail, social media, and other sources for breaking or developing stories.
- Develop strong relationships with community leaders, government officials, and public safety agencies.
- Vet story ideas and news tips for credibility and relevance.
- Assign and track crews; ensure timely, balanced, and compelling coverage.
- Assist with writing and posting content to the KITV.com website and social platforms.
- Coordinate live shots, interviews, and field resources.
- Keep the newsroom informed throughout the day of developing stories and coverage plans.
- Support long-term planning and enterprise content.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of newsroom or assignment desk desired.
- Strong understanding of editorial standards, ethics, and media law.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to multitask and make quick decisions in a dynamic environment.
- Proficient with ENPS, social media, and digital publishing tools preferred.
- Knowledge of Hawai‘i’s communities, geography, and key institutions is required.
- Ideal candidate has a good network and understanding of how to reach important officials (state, city, government agencies and lawmakers), key local companies/organizations, and local stakeholders
