Job Summary
The Quote Engineer is a key member of our engineering team, responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and timely cost estimates and quotations for custom-manufactured bulk material handling equipment. This role combines technical engineering knowledge with cost analysis to support the sales process, collaborating closely with sales, engineering, purchasing, and production teams to ensure quotes reflect realistic manufacturing processes, material requirements, lead times, and profitability targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Review customer inquiries, RFQs (Requests for Quote), drawings, specifications, and technical requirements for custom equipment projects.
- Perform detailed cost estimating, including material take-offs, labor hours, fabrication processes, machining/welding requirements, subcontracted services, overhead, and profit margins.
- Develop comprehensive quotations, including pricing breakdowns, scope of supply, exceptions/clarifications, lead times, terms & conditions, and any necessary technical proposals.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and purchasing teams to validate assumptions, identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensure manufacturability within our facility's capabilities.
- Analyze historical data, current material pricing, labor rates, and production capacity to improve quote accuracy and win rates.
- Support sales team during customer negotiations by providing technical and cost justification, alternative solutions, and value engineering recommendations.
- Maintain and update costing databases, templates, and standardized processes for quoting efficiency.
- Track quote outcomes (wins/losses) and provide feedback to refine estimating methods and identify trends.
- Ensure all quotes comply with company policies, industry standards, and customer requirements.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to quoting processes and cost modeling.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field (preferred); equivalent experience in custom fabrication/estimating will be considered.
- 3–7 years of experience in quoting, estimating, or cost engineering within a manufacturing environment, preferably custom/heavy fabrication, welding, machining, or material handling equipment.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (e.g., welding, cutting, forming, machining, assembly) and how they impact costs and lead times.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar experience a plus).
- Excellent analytical and mathematical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (advanced functions, pivot tables, formulas) and ERP/MRP systems.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate across departments and interact with customers when needed.
- Ability to manage multiple quotes simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
- Knowledge of bulk material handling equipment or conveyor systems is highly desirable.
- Experience with cost modeling for custom-engineered products.
- Familiarity with steel pricing, supply chain dynamics, and sourcing strategies.
- Understanding of Lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement.
