Compensation

  • Expected 2026 Hiring Range: $34.12 - $36.37 per hour ($70,969.60 - $75,649.60 annually), depending on qualifications, relevant experience, and alignment with internal equity.
  • Full Range (2026): $34.12 to $44.07 per hour ($70,969.60 - $91,665.60 annually), with the potential for additional longevity-based compensation.

Lateral hire compensation will be considered in accordance with the applicant’s qualified years of experience in law enforcement.

General Definition of Work

Performs work protecting life and property, patrolling and responding to calls for services, preventing crime, apprehending criminals and enforcing laws and ordinances in the County on an assigned shift or on special assignments, performing investigations and traffic regulation, serving civil papers, maintaining records and files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Work is performed under the direction of the Sheriff.

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Provides routine patrol service to the County to identify potential criminal/non-criminal activities, traffic, and health and safety concerns; apprehends and arrests persons involved in criminal activity with reasonable force, if necessary.
  • Investigates criminal activities such as burglaries, child abuse and neglect, vehicular homicide, felony stops, search warrants, homicides, gambling, thefts, forgeries, domestic violence, drug investigations, assaults, jail security, arson, animal welfare, suicides, game violations, and pollution violations.
  • Investigates non-criminal activities such as boat and water safety, building security, town security, residence security, civil process, courtroom testimonies, complaint signing, vehicle maintenance, county park security, wildlife control, and coroner assistance.
  • Manages traffic incidents such as accidents, property damage, personal injury, DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) arrests, petty misdemeanors, and traffic direction.
  • Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects; enforces appropriate laws and/or ordinances.
  • Assists state patrol, Department of Natural Resources, and other counties as needed.
  • Performs special assignments, including entry team, detox transfers, mental illness transfers, prisoner transfers, transient transfers, emergency blood transfers, and eye transfers.
  • Reviews, receives, and prepares various reports, documents, and forms.
  • Communicates with the public as a representative of the Sheriff’s office.
  • Delivers community relations services; facilitates public discussions and presentations on drugs, abductions, gangs, crime prevention and related programs; promotes drug prevention education and conducts safety training and preparedness.
  • Speaks with complainants and the public in person and over the phone.
  • Exercises teamwork with other county employees and management in carrying out the shared mission of serving the public.
  • Follows workplace safety rules and notifies management of observed risks in a timely manner.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of data that is protected by law.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates/Technical degree, and minimal experience in law enforcement or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) License upon hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must pass a criminal history background investigation.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Must pass a pre-employment psychological evaluation.

  • Must meet and maintain all training and education requirements for position.

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements and Activity

This work requires the regular exertion of 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions.

Ability to lift and carry or drag objects or people weighing up to 100 pounds at an accident scene or when responding to calls for service and to chase and subdue suspects as required. Peripheral vision or side vision is the ability to see objects and movement outside of the direct line of vision and may be needed to stop any potential conflicts that may occur.

Sensory Requirements

Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.

Sensory Utilization

Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.

The Deputy must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machines, including, but not limited to squad car automobile, in-automobile computer and camera systems, evidence kits (i.e. blood and urine and sexual assault kits), audio and video surveillance equipment, cameras, first aid materials, personal protective gear (i.e. hazardous containment suit, bullet proof vest, and gas mask), two-way radio, firearms, explosive devices, restraint devices, computer, telephone, copier/printer/scanner, facsimile machine, and hand tools.

The Deputy must be capable of exercising self-control and physical effort when confronted with emergencies and potentially dangerous situations involving the use of firearms and physical force. The Deputy must demonstrate skill and proficiency in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, firearms, restraints, and other equipment. The Deputy has direct exposure to various types of evidentiary items including, narcotics, chemicals used to manufacture narcotics, drug paraphernalia, human and animal bodily fluids and weapons. Physical demand requirements are a variable blend of sedentary or office environment work and intermittent heavy physical exertion, sometimes without opportunity to prepare.

Environmental Conditions

Work regularly requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to blood-borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Other

The position requires driving at high rates of speed on all types of road conditions while responding to stressful emergency calls. The position requires one to deal with hostile and combative persons as well as dealing with people wielding deadly weapons such as guns or knives.

The position is unique in that it requires the individual to work rotating shifts under many different conditions. This position is susceptible to working under wet humid conditions, near moving mechanical parts such as when rescuing people from farm accidents or traffic accidents, extreme weather conditions ranging from hot humid weather to extreme cold weather, along with dusty and dry conditions. There is the risk of exposure to radiation or other dangerous chemicals and further risks working in inadequate lighting or near dark conditions and the added risk of working with people and then being susceptible to contracting the HIV virus or other such viruses.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Isanti County reserves the right to select and limit the number of candidates in the selection process. Applications will be first evaluated to determine if the applicants meets the minimum job qualifications. Upon successful completion of minimum qualifications, applications will be evaluated based on a review of application materials, which may include, but is not limited to: application, screening questions, training and experience, and subject matter expert review (SME). Additionally, top candidates will be required to complete a Personal Evaluation Profile (PEP) test. Veterans Preference will be applied in accordance with Minnesota law.

Selected candidates will be contacted to schedule a background investigation which is conducted by Isanti County Sheriff's Office. The background process may take up to three (3) months to complete. Selections to move forward in the process will be made upon completion and review of background investigation results. Costs of the background will be paid for by Isanti County.

Prior To Employment Applicant Must

  • Possess no convictions of a felony or other criminal conviction as outlined in the MN POST Board rules.
  • Successfully pass the following exam components: Oral Interview, Personal Evaluation Profile, Background Investigation, Medical Examination, Psychological Evaluation and Firearms evaluation.
  • Pass a comprehensive medical examination prior to appointment to ascertain applicant's ability to perform essential job functions. These general medical requirements are not intended to be an exhaustive or complete list of medical guidelines used by the authorized examining physician. The general medical requirements include:
    • Distant vision of 20/100 uncorrected, corrected to 20/20.
    • Near vision of 20/20 either corrected or uncorrected.
    • Normal color vision and depth perception standards.
    • Normal hearing standards.
    • Normal height/weight proportion standards.
    • Full function of spine and all limbs and digits.
    • Must not have episodes of dizziness, blackouts or incapacitating headaches.
    • Must not have cardiovascular problems including hypertension that may interfere with job performance.
    • Must not have allergic problems that may interfere with job performance.
    • Must not have any respiratory impairment.
