Diesel Generator Technician II

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Minimum 1-3 years generator, diesel engine, industrial maintenance or related experience.
• Valid driver license.
• Ability to read technical manuals and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to independently diagnose and repair diesel generator mechanical, fuel and control system faults without direct supervision.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, scheduled overtime and on-call assignments.
• NFPA 70E qualified-person status, or ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment.
• Basic computer literacy, including use of maintenance management software, spreadsheets and email.

• Technical training in diesel technology, industrial maintenance or electrical systems.
• Experience with Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU, Kohler or Generac equipment.
• CMMS experience.
• Prior experience in a data center, hyperscale, utility, hospital or other mission-critical standby power environment.
• Experience with paralleling switchgear, automatic transfer switches and medium-voltage distribution equipment.
• Manufacturer factory training or certification on Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU, Kohler or Generac generator sets.
• Experience supporting commissioning or integrated systems testing on new generator installations.
• Formal root cause analysis training such as 5-Why, fishbone or Kepner-Tregoe methodology.
• OSHA 30, forklift, aerial lift or overhead crane certification.
• Associate degree or completed apprenticeship in diesel technology, industrial maintenance, electrical technology or a related field.

• Advanced diagnostic ability across mechanical, fuel, cooling, control and electrical systems, including fault isolation using schematics and manufacturer diagnostic software.
• Working knowledge of electrical systems and safe work practices up to 480V, with familiarity with medium-voltage equipment and switching operations.
• Knowledge of NFPA 110 standards for emergency and standby power systems, NFPA 70E electrical safety requirements and NETA acceptance and maintenance testing practices.
• Understanding of EPA emissions requirements applicable to stationary compression ignition engines and the recordkeeping obligations they create.
• Ability to lead structured root cause analysis and translate findings into durable corrective and preventive actions.
• Ability to mentor, coach and formally train less experienced technicians and assess their task readiness.
• Technical writing ability sufficient to author and revise procedures, test plans and incident reports.
• Sound judgment and decision-making under time pressure during outage, alarm and emergency response conditions.
• Ability to manage vendors and contractors, including scope verification, quality review and safety oversight.
• Ability to plan and sequence own work and the work of others across concurrent maintenance activities and competing priorities.

• Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach and climb ladders.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.

• Work is performed at a remote power generation and data center site, both indoors and outdoors, in extreme heat, cold, wind, dust and precipitation.
• Regular exposure to high noise levels, vibration, diesel exhaust, fuels, oils and solvents; hearing and respiratory protection required in designated areas.
• Position supports a 24/7 operating environment and requires rotating shift work, scheduled overtime, weekend and holiday coverage, and participation in an on-call rotation.
• Occasional local travel between company sites; periodic overnight travel for factory training, vendor support or commissioning activities.
• Work near energized electrical equipment up to 480V and in proximity to medium-voltage, pressurized and high-temperature systems.
  
  

• Independently perform preventive, corrective and advanced diagnostic maintenance and repair on diesel generators and supporting equipment, including precision tasks such as torque procedures, shaft and coupling alignment, and vibration and thermographic inspection.
• Troubleshoot, test and repair automatic transfer switches and paralleling switchgear, and program, calibrate and adjust engine and generator controllers such as Caterpillar EMCP, Woodward easYgen, Deep Sea Electronics, ASCO and Russelectric, including verification of sequence of operations and transfer timing.
• Lead load bank and operational readiness testing, including test plan development, instrumentation setup, data capture and results reporting.
• Maintain and troubleshoot Tier 4 emissions aftertreatment systems, including selective catalytic reduction, diesel exhaust fluid systems and particulate filters, and own the site fuel quality program covering polishing schedules, tank cleaning intervals, sampling protocols and corrective action on out-of-specification results.
• Maintain environmental and regulatory compliance records, including EPA NSPS Subpart IIII and RICE NESHAP run-hour, testing and maintenance documentation, and document all work in CMMS (Fiix or equivalent).
• Serve as a qualified person for lockout/tagout and energized work permitting within company policy and NFPA 70E, and act as escalation point during after-hours emergency events, directing on-site response until supervision arrives.
• Author and revise maintenance, standard and emergency operating procedures and preventive maintenance task lists, and support commissioning and integrated systems testing for new and modified generator, fuel and switchgear installations, including witness testing and punch list closure.
• Drive reliability and parts readiness by leading root cause analysis, trending failure history, mean time between failures, preventive maintenance compliance and corrective backlog, managing critical spare parts strategy, coordinating OEM and third-party vendors and warranty claims, and mentoring and training Level I technicians.
