Diesel Generator Technician I

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand and power tools.
• Valid driver license.
• Ability to read technical manuals and procedures.
• Minimum 18 years of age.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
• Basic computer literacy, including use of email, mobile devices and maintenance management software.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, scheduled overtime and on-call assignments.
• Ability to obtain OSHA 10 and lockout/tagout authorized-person qualification within the first 90 days of employment.

• Technical training in diesel technology, industrial maintenance or electrical systems.
• Experience with Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU, Kohler or Generac equipment.
• CMMS experience.
• Basic electrical knowledge, including AC/DC fundamentals and use of a digital multimeter.
• Prior experience in a data center, utility, oil and gas, marine or other mission-critical operating environment.
• Forklift, aerial lift or overhead crane certification.
• Military technical training in mechanical, electrical or power generation systems.

• Working knowledge of diesel engine theory, fuel and air systems, cooling systems and lubrication fundamentals.
• Basic knowledge of electrical fundamentals, including AC/DC theory, voltage and continuity measurement and safe use of test equipment.
• Understanding of lockout/tagout, arc flash boundaries, personal protective equipment and job hazard analysis.
• Accuracy and attention to detail in maintenance documentation and regulatory recordkeeping.
• Ability to follow written procedures precisely in a mission-critical environment where equipment failure carries significant operational consequences.
• Willingness to learn and apply new technical skills, with the ability to accept coaching and direction.
• Ability to maintain composure and follow escalation protocols during outage and emergency conditions.
• Basic proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems and mobile work-order tools.

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach and climb ladders.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.

• Work is performed at a remote power generation and data center site, both indoors and outdoors, in extreme heat, cold, wind, dust and precipitation.
• Regular exposure to high noise levels, vibration, diesel exhaust, fuels, oils and solvents; hearing and respiratory protection required in designated areas.
• Position supports a 24/7 operating environment and requires rotating shift work, scheduled overtime, weekend and holiday coverage, and participation in an on-call rotation.
• Occasional local travel between company sites; limited overnight travel for training or vendor support.
• Work near energized electrical equipment up to 480V and in proximity to pressurized and high-temperature systems.
  
  

• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on diesel generators and supporting equipment, including inspection of fuel, cooling, lubrication, exhaust, starting and charging systems.
• Conduct operational testing and readiness inspections, and support monthly and annual generator exercises, no-load and load testing, and emergency readiness drills.
• Perform fuel system quality management activities, including fuel sampling, polishing and filtration, tank level monitoring, and checks for water and microbial contamination.
• Perform starting battery maintenance and testing, including load and impedance testing, terminal cleaning, electrolyte checks and charger output verification, and collect engine oil, coolant and fuel samples for laboratory analysis.
• Document maintenance activities in CMMS (Fiix or equivalent) and record engine run hours, fuel consumption and emissions-related data required for environmental permits and reporting.
• Maintain compliance with safety, environmental and company policies, including spill prevention and secondary containment inspections, housekeeping in fuel storage and generator areas, and lockout/tagout, hot work, confined space and elevated work procedures under the direction of a qualified technician.
• Respond to generator and fuel system alarms, perform first-level assessment and escalate as required, and participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation with after-hours emergency response.
• Read and interpret manufacturer manuals, wiring schematics and single-line diagrams; maintain assigned tools, test equipment, consumables and critical spare parts inventory; and complete assigned safety, technical and compliance training within required timeframes.
