OVERVIEW & PURPOSE:
Under general supervision, performs supervisory, skilled and technical work in directing Emergency Medical Service operations at an assigned station during an assigned shift. Work involves supervision of the medical care administered during the shift, ensuring the equipment is in working condition, supplies are available on each vehicle and that each vehicle is staffed with qualified personnel. Work also involves performing the duties of an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims and administering appropriate emergency medical care to patients while en route to a hospital. Responsible for responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons and transporting patients to a medical facility. Must exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in dealing with sick or injured persons and with the general public. Responsible for performing in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques but must exercise considerable independent judgment in assessing a victim's condition and in applying short-term relief. Attends all Departmental Training/Quality Assurance activities. Responsibilities also include the training of new and current employees in the field of emergency medicine that is in compliance with the Iredell County Emergency Medical Service field and administrative protocols and procedures. This also includes the training in all aspects of the job to include base duties, stocking of equipment, etc. and any other duties assigned by the administration or supervisory staff. Crew Chiefs are also required to precept with Emergency Medical Service students and observers and complete the necessary paperwork during the schedule shift time frame. Employee is exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Reports to their assigned Shift Supervisor and is Lead Paramedic of crew. Employee is responsible for safe use of ambulance and all equipment. Employee is responsible for all operations of a crew during shift. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Supervises, instructs, and directs Paramedics and other assigned employees or students on designated ambulance; observes Emergency Medical Technicians activities, and reports and discusses perceived problems or deficiencies with appropriate Emergency Medical Services administrative staff, as appropriate; maintains contact with other supervisory personnel to discuss concerns affecting emergency medical services operations.
Responds to emergency calls as a paramedic attendant or driver, performs necessary medical/rescue work in accordance with established local protocol for Basic and Advanced Life Support. Such medical care shall be performed in accordance with state and local regulations, rules and protocols governing the delivery of emergency medical care.
Employee attends all departmental training activities.

Considerable knowledge of and skill in administering emergency medical procedures and techniques, of anatomy and physiology, and of intravenous therapy and skill in recognizing adverse conditions.
Considerable knowledge of equipment and supplies employed in emergency care of patients and accident victims.
Considerable knowledge of county geography and locations of roads and streets.
Skill in recognizing trauma and signs and symptoms of medical emergencies to determine appropriate treatment.
Ability to perform duties in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, medical protocols and standing orders.
Ability to work with a diverse socioeconomic population based on the unique situations encountered.
Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergencies and stressful situations.
Ability to safely drive an emergency medical vehicle in adverse conditions and according to motor vehicle laws.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE “REQUIREMENTS”:
Graduation from High School and Paramedic experience in Emergency Medical Services. Functioning as a released Paramedic within Iredell EMS.
ADDITIONAL “REQUIREMENTS”:
Valid and non-encumbered Certification as a North Carolina Paramedic.
Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License.
