An Apparel Technical Designer is responsible for translating a designer’s concept into a garment that fits correctly, meets quality standards, and can be produced efficiently. They manage garment specifications, fit development, construction details, and communication with internal & external partners including factories to ensure the product is developed accurately from prototype to bulk production.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Technical Specification Development- Create and maintain detailed tech packs including measurements, construction details, and materials.
- Develop spec sheets, grading rules, and garment measurements.
- Must have strong attention to detail to ensure all technical details are accurate for factory production.
- Ability to manage multiple styles and deadlines within a fast-paced environment.
- Conduct and lead fit sessions on live models or mannequins.
- Evaluate garment fit, balance, and proportions.
- Provide fit corrections and technical comments for sample improvements.
- Measure and inspect proto samples, fit samples, and pre-production samples.
- Compare samples with approved specs and standards.
- Track and approve revisions before production.
- Ensure proper garment construction methods are followed.
- Review stitching, seams, trims, and finishing details.
- Maintain brand fit and integrity, consistency across styles.
- Communicate clearly technical instructions and fit comments to factories.
- Collaborate with pattern makers and production teams.
- Have good problem-solving ability to troubleshoot production or pattern issues.
- Design team – interpret design intent
- Product development – manage timelines and samples
- Merchandising team – ensure product meets market requirements
- Production team – support bulk manufacturing
ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO
- Create and update detailed Spec which Includes measurements, construction details, and flat sketches with how to measure details.
- Define tolerances and grading rules for size ranges.
- Ensure measurements align with account/brand fit standards.
- Lead or assist in fit sessions on dress forms.
- Evaluate garment fit, balance, and proportions.
- Identify necessary pattern or construction adjustments.
- Review and measure various samples such as market samples, proto samples, fit samples, and pre-production samples.
- Document fit comments and correction instructions.
- Communicate updates clearly to factories and pattern makers.
- Ensure revisions are implemented in the next sample.
5. Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams
- Working closely with Design, Product Development, Merchandising, Production and SHO (Shanghai Office/team).
- Ensuring garments meet design intent, standards and cost requirements.
6. Communicate with Vendors and Factories
- Send technical instructions and updates.
- Resolve issues related to fit, pattern, and construction.
- Ensure factory samples meet account/brand standards.
- Communication is sent through PLM comments, outlook and Teams Chat.
7. Ensure Construction and Quality Standards
- Review sewing methods, seams, trims, and finishes.
- Ensure garments meet brand quality expectations.
- Provide recommendations for improved construction.
8. Support Product Development Timeline
- Ensure revisions are completed within schedule.
- Help maintain on-time production readiness.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of (4) years working as an apparel technical designer and proficient computer skills: PLM (Centric, Flex, Lectra), Illustrator, Photoshop, Microsoft Software: Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and related programs. 3D related skills are a plus.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
BA in Fashion Design or Merchandising or a minimum of 4-5 years of experience
BUSINESS HOURS
Hours of operation: Monday-Friday: 9:00 am – 6:00 pm. Flexible and able to work the hours needed to get the job done.
