Overview:
Supports the daily cultivation of crops—planting, watering, pruning, and harvesting—within controlled environments to support community food sovereignty. Ensure optimal plant health by managing climate controls, pests, and nutrients, while often maintaining irrigation systems and assisting in field transplantation.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist the Greenhouse Lead with plan layout and planting of garden with specific vegetables. This will include early season crops such as potatoes, onions, cabbage, broccoli beets and a variety of green leafy crops
- Plant Summer annuals such as tomatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, corn, and ect…
- Start vegetables in the greenhouse in transplanting
- Order appropriate vegetable seeds and equipment needed for a successful crop as directed.
- Keep records as needed via spreadsheets and other types of documentation
- Upkeep on the greenhouses: This will include cleaning and servicing as needed and cleaning/sanitizing for the next crop
- Water/weed/fertilize garden as required for a satisfactory crop
- Harvest vegetables at appropriate harvesting time.
- Good communication skills with the ability to communicate in addition to following directions
- Must be able to adhere to strict controls related to organic, regenerative and other specific growing and harvest practices.
- Must be able to wear PPE and work safely in various weather conditions, tool usage, and team work situations.
- Other relevant duties as assigned
Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of the yearly cycle of garden/fruit/planting
- Experience in greenhouse and garden maintenance preferred
- Knowledge of health and safety regarding gardening
- Ability to use various gardening tools
Tools and Equipment Used
- Variety of hand tools such as - shovels, hand trowels, pruning and harvesting shears, and other tools
- May use other automated or power driven equipment
Physical Demands
- This position may require the ability to stand, stoop, or kneel for long periods of time
Work Environment
- Work is conducted outdoors, in humid and/dry conditions.
- Work requires the ability to be around all kinds of plants and insects which may cause exposure to allergies etc.
