What are the responsibilities and job description for the Retention and Attendance Specialist position at Invictus High School?
NATURE OF JOB: The retention and attendance specialist role involves a
multifaceted and multi-step process that will lead to an increase in student
attendance, family engagement, and with an aim to support student persistence to
graduation. As brick-and-mortar DOPRs typically have low attendance rates, the
primary goal of the retention and attendance clerk is to plan, develop, implement,
and/or lead any programs or initiatives that will yield greater student attendance.
This role is charged with engaging students to prevent dropout, through a variety of
communication mediums and home visits in support of students, their families, and
school system needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitor attendance in conjunction with the homeroom teachers and the
vocational specialists;
- Document and publish attendance figures to school stakeholders regarding
the student population, emphasizing the at-risk attenders;
- Reach out to at-risk population through multiple channels (all-call system,
direct phone calls, home visits when necessary, use of social media, text
messaging, email, and other);
- Develop a plan and work to remove barriers to attendance;
- Develop and implement interventions as needed to prevent dropout through
collaboration with all stakeholders, teachers, community members, and families;
- Maintain thorough records of intervention efforts with each student, including
communication notes, to assess efficacy and encourage thoughtfulness in
adjusting strategies to meet student and stakeholder needs;
- Act as a community contact/liaison among consulting groups and agencies to
foster community partnerships to help our students with the issues that prevent
regular attendance;
- Monitor paperwork in conjunction with the enrollment specialists and EMIS
coordinator;
- Assist in obtaining missing enrollment paperwork for students currently in
attendance. This includes, but is not limited to, proof of residency claims,
proof of income claims, immunization records, transcripts, free/reduced lunch
forms and other incomplete enrollment packet elements;
- Build rapport with students in building and at school-sponsored events to
foster relationships between and among community members, impact the
student experience, and assist on necessary projects and tasks critical to the
operation of school;
- Become familiar with and assist with the enrollment process to complete an
enrollment packet with a potential enrollee or answer any questions about the
enrollment process;
- Assist vocational coordinator with necessary job visits and follow-ups for
employed students;
- Attend mandatory system-wide events including graduation, graduation
rehearsal, and staff professional developments as scheduled throughout
the year.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalency;
- Bachelor’s degree preferred;
- The ability to work both alone and in small group environments,
maintain professional communication skills through email, chat and
cloud-based document sharing;
- The ability to work with urban, at risk youth (ages 16-23) to establish
ties and rapport;
- The ability to maintain paperwork and digitally and via hard copies;
- Office skills, cloud-based computing (Google apps), including email,
calendar, and drive, social media including Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram, and OTJ programs including: BB Connect5, Survey
Monkey, and SalesForce ;
- Strong critical and analytical thinking skills, ability to clearly and
concisely communicate with internal and external audiences;
- Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a diverse
student body and staff;
- Ability to travel for institutional directives;
- Ability to work outside of a traditional work schedule;
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
