Position Summary
The Director of Architecture and Design leads architectural and interior design for Intuitive Health's national portfolio of Freestanding Emergency Department and Urgent Care facilities, from site plan and schematics, through working with regional Health System Partners, construction documents, and verifying specifications and submittals. Operating in a fast-paced, high-growth environment, this leader serves as the primary point of contact for all aspects of architecture and design across Intuitive Health's operating divisions and health system partnerships.
This role is accountable for establishing and maintaining a consistent standard of design excellence that enhances the patient experience, building and leading a talented team of in-house designers and external architectural and engineering resources, and delivering significant impact against Intuitive Health's core architectural objectives. The scope spans new ground-up construction, cold-shell internal fit-outs, remodels, re-positionings, storefront and demising projects, and expansions, with an emphasis on emergency room, medical lab, and clinic functionality.
The Director will collaborate closely with Construction, Real Estate, Clinic Operations, Lab Operations, and Implementations to ensure a world-class experience for our patients and a repeatable, scalable delivery model for our partners.

Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership and Standards
- Own, evolve, and enforce Intuitive Health's architectural and interior design standards, ensuring every new design and construction activity is consistent with brand, operational, and clinical requirements.
- Drive the origination, development, and execution of new design concepts that differentiate the patient experience and advance the Intuitive Health brand.
- Provide direct oversight of design presentation and maintain deep expertise in architectural practice, building materials, construction methods, discipline integration, and applicable building codes.
- Create, maintain, and continuously improve design playbooks, prototype models, and repeatable standards that enable consistent execution at scale.
- Lead the team through all phases of architecture and design — outlining schedules, managing deliverables, developing design direction, and leading critiques.
- Perform test fits and site plans, partnering with the Pre-Development Project Manager to provide design standards, setback guidelines, and other site-design parameters.
- Coordinate on all design and architecture documents related to entitlements and planning approvals.
- Execute initial floor plans and schematic designs and secure sign-offs from Intuitive Health and health system partners.
- Ensure projects progress on schedule and at quality through Design Development, with the ability to manage select projects through construction as needed.
- Ensure accurate and complete records are maintained for all active and completed projects, including as-built drawings and specifications.
- Recruit, train, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of qualified architecture and interior design professionals.
- Maintain skilled staffing levels against forward-looking project workload requirements, balancing in-house and external resources.
- Track team members' workload and progress, provide coaching, and reassign effort to keep schedules on track and protect quality of work.
- Foster a collaborative, creative culture that blends design innovation with practical, buildable solutions.
- Serve as the primary interface with external architecture and engineering vendors, negotiating Master Service Agreements and A&E fees.
- Work directly with Intuitive Health leadership, health system partners, consultants, and collaborators — internal and external — throughout the project lifecycle.
- Consult with senior business leadership on major project attributes, timing, capital requirements, and financial planning inputs.
- Establish initial budget projections and oversee the preliminary A&D budget, ensuring adherence across architecture, civil, structural, and design services throughout the project lifecycle.
- Plan for and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and permits, including state healthcare facility licensing, FGI Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities, ADA, NFPA, and AHJ requirements.
- Partner with Construction, Real Estate, and Operations leadership to identify and mitigate design-related risk early in the project lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Interior Architecture/Design from an accredited institution.
- Experience: 15 years of progressive experience in a fast-paced, multi-site design, construction, or remodeling environment — such as healthcare, medical office, or similar commercial development programs.
- Track Record: Demonstrated history of creative, innovative design and successful execution across a national or multi-market portfolio.
- Leadership: Proven experience recruiting, leading, and scaling design teams, and managing operational aspects of an end-to-end design function.
- Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills, including hand-drafting and sketching for on-the-spot discussions with clients, partners, and project teams.
- Judgment: Ability to think through complex issues and provide sound recommendations and solutions under tight timelines.
- Travel: Willingness and ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
- Active professional license in Architecture (AIA/NCARB) or Interior Design (NCIDQ); LEED AP, WELL AP, or EDAC credentials a plus.
- Direct experience with freestanding emergency departments, urgent care centers, ambulatory surgery centers, or other inpatient/outpatient healthcare environments.
- Familiarity with state-level healthcare facility regulations, Certificate of Need processes, and health system partnership dynamics.
- Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, BIM workflows, Bluebeam, and modern design-presentation tools (Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, Enscape, or similar).
- Experience developing and scaling prototype-driven, brand-consistent facility programs across multiple markets.
- High degree of creativity, foresight, and sound judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding architectural programs and activities.
- Self-directed, motivated, and professional, with the ability to operate effectively in a highly collaborative team environment.
- Skilled at blending a high level of creativity with practical, constructible, and cost-conscious solutions.
