Responsibilities
- Safely operate transit buses and paratransit vehicles according to established routes and schedules
- Conduct thorough vehicle inspections before and after shifts to ensure mechanical safety and compliance with DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations
- Navigate city streets efficiently while managing traffic laws, adverse weather conditions, and passenger needs
- Communicate effectively with dispatchers using two-way radios to receive instructions or report incidents
- Maintain accurate records of trips, vehicle maintenance checks, and passenger counts in accordance with transportation safety regulations
- Follow all traffic laws, safety protocols, and state transportation regulations to guarantee a secure environment for passengers and fellow drivers
Skills
- Mechanical knowledge to perform basic vehicle inspections and troubleshoot minor issues
- Proven experience driving various types of commercial vehicles such as buses or shuttle vans
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to assist passengers courteously and professionally
- Knowledge of city street navigation, traffic laws, and driving in adverse weather conditions
- Familiarity with vehicle safety features including air brakes and other essential bus systems
- Ability to communicate clearly using two-way radios for driver communication and coordination
- Experience with transportation safety regulations including DOT (Department of Transportation) standards and state transportation rules
- Defensive driving skills combined with a focus on passenger safety at all times
- Strong communication skills in English for effective interaction with passengers and team members
- Previous delivery driver or van driver experience is a plus for versatility in driving roles
