Customs Entry Writer
The Customs Entry Writer is responsible for preparing and submitting the necessary documentation for goods entering a country to ensure they comply with all customs laws and regulations. They work closely with customs brokers, clients, government agencies, and transportation companies to facilitate the timely and accurate clearance of shipments.
Job duties and responsibilities:
· Preparing and filing customs entries: Transmit import and export documentation to customs authorities using electronic systems like the Automated Broker Interface (ABI).
· Tariff classification: Determine the correct Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes for imported products to calculate duties and tariffs.
· Document review: Compile and examine import documents, such as commercial invoices and certificates of origin, to check for accuracy and compliance.
· Compliance monitoring: Track customs entries to ensure timely processing and monitor compliance with government regulations from agencies like the FDA and USDA.
· Issue resolution: Resolve customs holds, delays, or rejections by communicating with government officials and carriers to ensure shipments are released.
· Communication: Serve as a point of contact for clients, overseas agents, and customs officials, providing status updates and resolving inquiries.
· Billing and record-keeping: Prepare billing for customs-related services and maintain accurate records of customs filings.
· Knowledge updates: Stay current with changes in customs regulations and import/export laws.
Qualifications and skills:
· Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in customs operations or customs brokerage.
· Strong knowledge of customs regulations, processes, and documentation.
· Familiarity with Editrade & NetChb, Nominations, and POA validation procedures.
· Proficiency in preparing and reviewing customs documentation.
· Attention to detail and accuracy in customs declarations and record-keeping.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
· Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in customs entry writing.
- Strong knowledge of customs regulations, processes, and documentation.
- Familiarity with import and export operations and customs clearance procedures.
- Fluent in English (oral and written).
- Proficient in using customs management software and systems.
- Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
