About the Role:

The Phlebotomist plays a critical role in the healthcare system by accurately and safely collecting blood specimens from patients for diagnostic testing, transfusions, research, or blood donations. This position requires meticulous attention to detail to ensure proper specimen labeling, handling, and processing to maintain sample integrity and patient safety. The Phlebotomist must establish rapport with patients of diverse backgrounds to ease anxiety and ensure cooperation during blood collection procedures. Additionally, the role involves maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations and infection control standards to protect both patients and staff. Ultimately, the Phlebotomist contributes to timely and accurate laboratory results that support effective patient diagnosis and treatment planning.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
• Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (e.g., CPT, PBT) from a recognized certifying body.
• Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and blood collection techniques.
• Knowledge of specimen handling, labeling, and processing procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in a clinical or hospital laboratory setting.
• Additional certification in basic life support (BLS) or first aid.
• Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and laboratory information systems (LIS).
• Strong interpersonal skills with experience in patient care or customer service.
• Understanding of plasma processing techniques and advanced specimen management.

Responsibilities:

• Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures following established protocols and safety guidelines.
• Prepare and label blood specimens accurately to ensure proper identification and tracking throughout the testing process.
• Operate and maintain phlebotomy equipment and supplies, ensuring readiness and cleanliness at all times.
• Document patient information, collection details, and any adverse reactions or complications during the procedure.
• Assist in processing specimens, including plasma separation and preparation for laboratory analysis.
• Maintain compliance with infection control, safety standards, and regulatory requirements in all phlebotomy activities.
• Communicate effectively with patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory personnel to coordinate specimen collection and resolve issues.

Skills:

The required skills such as drawing blood, venipuncture, and specimen collection are fundamental to performing safe and effective blood draws daily, ensuring high-quality samples for laboratory analysis. Proficiency in blood collection and specimen processing techniques enables the Phlebotomist to handle specimens correctly, minimizing errors and contamination risks. Knowledge of plasma processing techniques supports additional laboratory functions that may be required in specialized settings. Preferred skills like familiarity with electronic health records and strong communication abilities facilitate seamless coordination with healthcare teams and improve patient experience throughout the specimen collection process.
