Join our client in Lakeland, FL as they grow their onsite Engineering team in a printing/packaging enviornment.



The Automation Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, programming, implementing, and supporting automated control systems that improve plant performance, efficiency, and safety. This role collaborates closely with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to deliver robust automation solutions that support production goals and optimize equipment performance.



Key Responsibilities

System Design & Development

  • Design, develop, and implement automation and control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, robotics, and industrial networks.
  • Create electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and system documentation in compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Specify automation hardware, instrumentation, and electrical components.

Programming & Integration

  • Program and troubleshoot PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or other platforms as applicable).
  • Develop and modify HMI/SCADA interfaces for operator usability and system efficiency.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, VFDs, servos, robotics, and other automation technologies.

Testing, Commissioning & Support

  • Conduct system testing, validation, and commissioning of automated equipment and processes.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve control system issues to minimize downtime.
  • Provide technical support to maintenance, operations, and engineering staff.

Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze production processes to identify opportunities for automation, optimization, and cost reduction.
  • Develop and implement process improvements to enhance equipment reliability, throughput, and safety.
  • Maintain and update control logic, documentation, procedures, and system backups.

Compliance & Standards

  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (NFPA, NEC, ISO, OSHA, etc.).
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging automation technologies and best practices.




Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3–7 years of experience in automation or industrial controls engineering preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley Studio 5000, Siemens TIA Portal, etc.).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA platforms (FactoryTalk, Wonderware, Ignition, etc.).
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of automated manufacturing systems, instrumentation, and control hardware.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
  • Familiarity with robotics, motion control, vision systems, and MES integration a plus.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting complex automated systems under pressure.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work cross-functionally.


Working Conditions

  • Typical manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • May require occasional travel to support equipment installations or vendors.
  • Ability to work off-shifts or weekends during commissioning or system upgrades as needed.
