The Director, Insurance & Risk Management plays a critical leadership role in protecting Clients U.S. and Canada’s people, assets, brand reputation, and financial strength.
Role Overview
The Director, Insurance & Risk Management leads the strategic design, execution, and governance of Clients commercial insurance and operational risk management programs. This role is responsible for safeguarding organizational enterprise value through comprehensive risk identification, assessment, mitigation, loss prevention, and risk-financing strategies.
You will oversee comprehensive commercial insurance portfolios, claims administration, and broker/carrier relationships, while serving as a trusted advisor on strategic business initiatives, capital projects, contract risk allocations, and M&A activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Insurance Strategy & Program Management: Lead the annual design, renewal, underwriting negotiations, and administration of North American commercial insurance lines (Property, GL/Umbrella, Product Liability, Auto, Workers’ Comp, D&O, EPL, Cyber, Marine/Cargo, Product Contamination/Recall, and Environmental).
- Total Cost of Risk (TCOR) & Budgeting: Manage the regional insurance budget, premium forecasting, deductible allocations, self-insured retention funds, and partner with Global Risk teams to optimize risk financing structures.
- Claims & Loss Control: Oversee high-exposure and litigated claims across property, casualty, and workers' comp. Partner with carriers, defense counsel, and plant operations to drive loss-prevention engineering and timely claim resolution.
- Contractual Risk Advisory: Review high-value third-party contracts (suppliers, co-manufacturers, logistics, commercial real estate) to negotiate indemnification, liability caps, and insurance transfer provisions alongside Procurement and Legal.
- Cyber & Emerging Risk: Partner with IT Security and Digital leadership to assess cyber vulnerabilities, quantify exposures, and implement risk-transfer and incident-response mechanisms.
- M&A and Strategic Initiatives: Conduct insurance and operational risk due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and plant expansions.
- Governance & Compliance: Ensure regulatory compliance, manage policy documentation and filings, lead internal/external audit readiness, and foster a risk-aware operational culture.
- Vendor & Broker Management: Drive performance metrics, service-level agreements, and strategic partnerships with global insurance brokers, third-party administrators (TPAs), and underwriters.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience: 10 years of progressive corporate risk management and commercial insurance experience, with at least 3–5 years in a senior leadership capacity. Experience within Food & Beverage, FMCG, CPG, or complex manufacturing environments is strongly preferred.
- Technical Depth: Proven expertise managing comprehensive commercial insurance towers, leading multi-million-dollar renewal negotiations, handling complex casualty/property claims, and analyzing TCOR.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business Administration, Legal Studies, or related field; Master’s/MBA preferred.
- Certifications: Professional designations such as ARM (Associate in Risk Management), CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), or CRM/CRMP are highly desirable.
