About this role
The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is responsible for assisting and data collection in the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation in the Correctional Setting. The LVN directs and guides patient teaching and activities that are commensurate with his/her education, demonstrated competencies and Nursing Practice Act (NPA). The LVN works directly with patients to provide their medications, to gather vitals, conduct chart reviews, and work closely with the psychiatric prescriber on the care, treatment and services for patients.
This position includes an additional 8% night differential and a 5% weekend differential.
Education:
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
Experience:
- One (1) or more years clinic experience preferred
- Correctional experience preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the state of employment
- Current CPR certification required
What you will do
- The LVN assists in the assessment and data collection of the physical, psychological and social dimensions of patients in the correctional setting.
- Assists in planning an individual treatment plan by using available resources in planning care and consults with
- RDON/ RNs and other staff as appropriate while applying knowledge and resources in planning care and patient teaching.
- Gather patient vitals and provide/ document the information for the psychiatric provider
- Conduct chart reviews and work closely with psychiatric prescriber on patient care needs
- Provide restoration of competency services in both group and individual formats in accordance with the patient’s treatment plan
- Count controlled substances, syringes, needles and sharps at the beginning of each shift with another staff member and sign count logs as needed.
- Implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols. Intervenes with proper safety techniques, procedures and standard precautions.
- Implements medical plan through administering medications in accordance with Health Care Practitioner's orders and protocols: Administers medications according to proper techniques and procedures pursuant to competency and all other approved routes of administration. Uses pharmacy knowledge and available resources to include drug reaction and overdose in administration of medications.
- Implements medical plans through obtaining diagnostic tests in accordance with Health Care Practitioner's orders and protocols: Obtains body fluid specimen
- Communicates information to ancillary departments using established referral process.
- As competencies are demonstrated in the unstructured correctional setting, it is the LVN’s responsibility to ensure he/she has access to an appropriate supervisor and that the policies, procedures and guidelines for that setting are established to guide the LVN practice.
- Communicates information to nursing staff, physician, health care unit supervisory personnel and other staff as necessary.
