System Administrator Duties and Responsibilities:

System Administrator Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and proactive System Administrator to ensure the reliable operation, security, and continuous improvement of our organization’s IT infrastructure. The ideal candidate will manage stand-alone ‘air-gapped’ Windows 11, Ubuntu, and RHEL computers. Other tasks might include servers, networks, and critical systems across on-premises and cloud environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and DCSA compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Maintenance & Configuration: Install, configure, and maintain servers, operating systems (Windows, Linux), virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper-V), and network infrastructure.
- Security & Compliance: Implement and enforce security policies, manage firewalls, conduct vulnerability assessments, ensure data backup and disaster recovery protocols are in place, and maintain compliance with government and industry standards.
- Troubleshooting & Support: Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network issues promptly; provide technical support to end-users and collaborate with IT teams to minimize downtime.
- Automation & Scripting: Develop and maintain scripts (PowerShell, Bash, Python) to automate routine tasks, improve efficiency, and support monitoring and reporting.
- Documentation & Communication: Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, procedures, and incident resolutions; communicate technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in multiple OS platforms with emphasis on Linux (CentOS, Red Hat, Ubuntu), and Windows systems
- Experience working in a research environment that relies extensively on Open Source solutions
- In-depth knowledge of the TCP / IP protocol suite, security architecture, securing and hardening Operating Systems, Networks, Databases and Applications.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science preferred, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3–5 years of experience in system administration, with proven expertise in Windows and Linux environments.
- Strong knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, and network protocols.
- Experience with virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and backup solutions.
- Proficiency in scripting languages and automation tools.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft MCSE, CompTIA Server , AWS Certified SysOps Administrator) are highly desirable.
